Chapter 69: My Last Possession
Sitting next to Grandma, Abigail handed over the box. Her eyes beamed with curiosity as she wondered about its contents.
"Oh, Abby..." Sophie Lewis began to speak, a bittersweet smile forming on her lips. Her eyes filled with sadness as she looked at her only granddaughter, deepening Abigail’s confusion.
"Granny, don’t confuse me. Why do you look sad all of a sudden?" Abigail asked.
"Abby, I know you’ve run out of the money your mother left for you. Yet, you’ve never asked me for a penny all this time. I feel sorry for you, my dear..."
Abigail lowered her gaze, unable to meet her grandmother’s sorrowful eyes.
What her grandmother said was true; she had never been open with her. She always claimed she covered only half of the nursing home expenses, relying on the funds left by her mother. But the truth was, the money had run out, and not a single penny remained.
"Don’t try to avoid telling me the truth, Abby. Even though I’m not young anymore, I can still count," Sophie said, her gentle eyes fixed on Abigail. "The money you received from selling the house was used to pay for your mother’s medical expenses and her funeral, right?"
Sophie felt heartbroken discussing this matter, but she couldn’t ignore it any longer, especially now that Abigail was struggling with her own issues. She needed plenty of money to start fresh and find a place to live.
"Granny, why are you bringing up that issue again?" Abigail looked up, trying hard not to cry.
