The Supreme Soldier in the City

Whether they were truly drunk or faking it, James Brown felt both women leaning on him from time to time. He knew he couldn’t let them stay here any longer, so he said to everyone, "Folks, I’m going to take these two ladies home first. I’m afraid I must excuse myself."

Although everyone was somewhat reluctant, they had no choice but to stop there and watched as James Brown left, supporting a hostess on each side.

James Brown stuffed Alice Brown and Laura Hog into the back seat and then took his place in the driver’s seat. As he started the car, he turned to ask them, "Where do you live? I’ll take you home."

Alice’s face was flushed, her eyes drunken and unfocused; she did not answer James’s question but instead said sweetly, "Mr. Brown, how did we perform today?"

James Brown laughed and said, "You did great. Didn’t you see how proud the groom was?"

Alice and Laura giggled, and Laura leaned forward to the back of James’s seat and asked, "So, how is Mr. Brown going to reward us?"

James knew they would say something like this and could only laugh and ask, "What kind of reward would you like?"

Laura responded with a sultry voice, "We don’t know; it’s up to you, Mr. Brown."

"Well, my reward is driving you home today."

"Mr. Brown, you’re so bad. How is that a reward?" Laura immediately protested.

Alice laughed and said, "This reward isn’t too bad. I’m afraid Mr. Brown has never driven anyone home before, right? That makes us quite honored."
