After finishing their supper, Lucius and Layla took a quiet stroll in the garden.
"Let’s go back. I’ll hold you until you fall asleep," he murmured, reaching out to her with open arms, a faint, reassuring smile softening his usual seriousness.
Layla gave him a grateful nod. "I’ve already packed your bag," she whispered, as they returned indoors. Once inside the bedroom, she climbed into bed, settling beneath the blanket. He closed the main lights, leaving only the bedside lamp casting a warm glow over them, and then slid into bed beside her.
With a tenderness that made her heart ache, he wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close. She rested her head against his chest, feeling the steady rhythm of his heartbeat.
"I’m worried about how you’ll manage without me," Lucius murmured, his voice laced with concern. His fingers gently combed through her hair, a soothing gesture that steadied them both. "It’s a difficult time for you."
Layla tilted her head up, meeting his gaze with a quiet confidence that held a depth of unspoken resilience. "But it will pass soon," she replied, her voice steady yet tender. "You told me to hold myself together, remember? Our hearts are connected—I’ll feel you with me, and I know I can manage."
Lucius exhaled, his gaze softening. "Then, I’ll trust you," he said, brushing the back of his fingers gently along her cheek. His eyes lingered on hers, searching, before drifting down to her lips. Slowly, he leaned in, his breath warm against her skin, and captured her lips in a tender kiss.
Their lips parted, and the kiss deepened further. Their hands found each other’s backs, tracing gentle paths and drawing each other closer, savoring the closeness.
Withdrawing after some time, the two of them smiled when Lucius planted a soft kiss on the top of her forehead. "Goodnight, Layla," he whispered softly. Wrapped in his arms, she felt safe enough to let her eyes drift shut, and slowly, she slipped into a peaceful sleep.
