On Celebration Street in Fengdeng City, Nan Yuso strolled slowly with Weaver Star, admiring the remnants of lantern decorations left behind after the festival. In front of the shops were colorful silks and precious fabrics transported here from afar, along with an array of meticulously crafted rare ornaments.
Nan Yuso always lingered when faced with these delicate, beautiful trinkets, unable to move on. She hadn’t even made it through this small stretch of shops, much less the long section still ahead.
Weaver Star, in contrast, showed little interest in such items. She would occasionally spot something she particularly liked, then purchase it directly without asking the price.
"You shouldn’t do that." Nan Yuso criticized Weaver Star’s habit of not inquiring about the price.
"Why?" Weaver Star asked, confused.
"Prices of trinkets, whether high or low, mean nothing to us. But many of these merchants are greedy. When other vendors notice you buying things without asking the price, they’ll deliberately inflate the cost of things you fancy. If they quadruple the price, that’s already being generous; charging ten or twenty times the original price would hardly be unusual," Nan Yuso explained.
"Is it really like this everywhere?" Weaver Star asked.
"Try it and you’ll see," Nan Yuso replied.
Weaver Star nodded, agreeing to Nan Yuso’s suggestion to test the theory.
