Chapter 317: Good Work

At the end of it all, Yohan lay on his bed with Vivian resting on his chest.

It was already morning, but he didn’t want to wake her after such a long night.

His phone on the bedside table rang, but he ignored it after seeing Helen’s name.

He knew she was probably just going to scold him about what he had done earlier, and he just wasn’t ready for any of that right now.

Helen called a few more times before giving up with a sigh.

She pushed open the door and stepped inside the office.

"You called for me, sir?"

The Police Commissioner sat behind his desk. His small stature, neatly pressed uniform, and tiny mustache made him look like a certain miniature European dictator, except his pot belly protruded far enough to ruin the resemblance.

Mayor Grant was also present, along with the Deputy Commissioner, a man not much older than thirty with a sturdy build, glasses, and a clean-shaven face.

It was a surprise to see all of them gathered so early in the morning, but she maintained a calm composure.

She spotted Simon Red standing in the corner.

"What is that man doing here? He’s still a suspect," she asked.

"It’s fine, Helen. I’ve interrogated him and cleared him of all charges," the commissioner said with a wave of his hand.

Something like that wasn’t supposed to be possible without going through the proper channels, but Helen didn’t question him.

"I’m more concerned about your official statement. You said you were the one who shot Hatoru?"

From their intense gazes, it was obvious they already knew the truth. Still, she stood her ground.

"That’s right."

"Are you sure about this? Simon here was telling me a different story."

"What did he say?" she asked, her brows knitting together.

The men exchanged glances.

Although Simon had already told them what had happened, he hadn’t mentioned any of it in his official statement, so he couldn’t say anything.

"Nothing," the commissioner sighed. "Good work. You can go carry on with your duties."

"Yes, sir."

She gave a salute before turning to leave. Even as she walked away, she could feel their eyes on her.

’So they’ve finally shown their faces’

She went straight to her office and flipped open her laptop to watch the live video feed of everything happening inside the commissioner’s office.

She had planted the bug there when she discovered he had connections to Hatoru.

"So what do we do now?" the Police Commissioner asked.

"What do you mean?" Simon asked with a frown. "It’s obvious she’s lying. We deal with her, and then the boy."

"No," the Deputy Commissioner said. "That’s too reckless. Helen would definitely see it coming. I’ve known her since we were at the academy. That woman is far more formidable than you would think."

"That isn’t the problem. The problem is the kid," Mayor Grant finally spoke up. "How could he have done everything you said on his own? It hardly makes any sense."

"Are you calling me a liar?" Simon asked angrily, stepping closer. "I’m telling you, I saw it with my own eyes! Does my face look like I’m just messing around?"

His face was wrapped in bandages, and a few of his teeth were even missing. Just shouting like that was enough to make him wince in pain.

Mayor Grant grabbed him by the jaw and said coldly,

"Lower your voice when speaking to me."

Pain was written all over Simon’s face, but he didn’t make a sound until Grant let go.

"Commissioner, how are you going to handle the girl?" Mayor Grant asked.

"The Deputy Inspector is more like a glorified secretary. I only keep her around because she has a nice ass. I’ll just ship her off somewhere. My main concern is how Hatoru’s unfortunate demise affects our plans," the commissioner said with a serious expression.

"Don’t worry about it. I’m sure a replacement will present himself," Grant said casually.

Simon tried to raise his hand as if volunteering, but a single glance from the three men stopped him halfway.

"Who do you think it’s going to be?" the commissioner asked.

"I’d say the most likely candidate is Mason Blackfire."

The Deputy Commissioner got up and handed the file to both of them.

Grant merely glanced at it.

"I’ve heard of him."

He tossed the file aside and sighed.

"But don’t you think it’s sad that Hatoru hasn’t even been buried yet, and we’re already searching for a replacement?"

The commissioner let out a small chuckle.

"Mr. Mayor, since when did you start feeling sad over the death of a business partner? Have you forgotten that this is no place to make friends?"

"Still, we’ve worked with that man for years, and you’re telling me you feel nothing?"

"I do feel something. I feel it was probably high time the old man stepped aside. We help him acquire all the properties he wants in this city for dirt cheap, and he leaves everything to his useless granddaughter when he dies? Don’t you see how evil that is?"

"Don’t act like you didn’t get paid handsomely," Grant pointed out.

"That’s pocket change compared to what Hatoru had. Well, I don’t know about you, but I’m going after everything I deserve."

"What does that mean?"

"What do you think?"

The mayor stared at him with a deep frown, his gaze fixed and unblinking. Even without another word being spoken, the atmosphere in the room shifted.

"I mean... come on. I thought you, of all people, wouldn’t mind..." the commissioner said, his voice shaking despite his efforts to face Mayor Grant.

"Leave Hatoru’s girl alone," Grant said coldly.

"But—"

"I said leave the girl alone. If you want, I can have her transfer thirty percent of his assets to your foundation."

"Okay. I’ll leave that up to you," the commissioner replied with a nod and a small grin.

Grant rose to his feet and headed for the door.

"Also, don’t forget to find out everything there is to know about that boy, and get it to me immediately."

He left with one hand on his pocket
