Chapter 313: The End of a Greedy man
His two fingers pierced the back of the Big Guy’s neck.
The point where the spine met the brain was technically the most reliable place to strike. Like the brain or the heart, it could be considered a vital target.
More importantly, it was one of the few areas with very little fat or muscle protecting it, making it the easiest place for him to reach.
There was only one problem with this move.
It was an instant kill.
The Big Guy froze for a moment before collapsing to the floor, releasing Yohan’s index and middle fingers, which were covered in blood almost to the knuckles.
Hatoru sprang to his feet, his eyes widening in horror. His mouth hung open, but no words came out.
Yohan stared at the body on the floor. He knew the Big Guy was probably not going to survive. Even if he somehow did, he would never move his body again.
It was hardly any different from what he had done to that girl that day.
But this time, strangely enough, he felt nothing.
No fear.
No regret.
Not even pity.
His gaze shifted to Hatoru, cold and unforgiving.
"How could you kill him, you cold-blooded fucking monster?!"
That was easily the most shocking thing Yohan had heard all day.
Hatoru calling him a monster.
The irony almost made him laugh. Instead, it forced him to reflect, if only for a moment, on everything he had done to reach this point.
"I agree. Maybe I am a monster."
He took a step forward.
"Who better to decide that than the man who turned me into one?"
Another step.
"I’ll show you the monster you created."
Hatoru’s face twisted in horror. He quickly pulled out the same kind of vial Simon had used, but before he could bring it to his lips, Yohan grabbed his wrist.
The vial shattered in Hatoru’s hand.
Glass shards pierced his palm, and he let out a pained grunt.
He looked up at Yohan, his eyes burning with rage.
"Are you going to kill me too?" Hatoru asked, forcing bravado into his voice. "Is that your big move?"
He faltered when Yohan answered him with silence.
Yohan simply stared.
"Do it, Yohan!" Jenna screamed from where she was tied. "Kill him now!"
"Don’t!"
Helen’s voice rang through the office as she burst through the doorway, with Izumi close behind her.
The interruption stole Yohan’s attention for only a fraction of a second.
But for Hatoru, that was enough.
He pulled a concealed blade from behind his back.
"Yohan! Look out!" Jenna screamed.
Yohan reacted instantly, jerking his head aside.
The knife missed his throat.
Instead, Hatoru drove the blade into the wrist that held him, forcing Yohan to release his grip.
The moment he was free, Hatoru dove behind the desk and pulled out a handgun.
For a brief second, Yohan was surprised that an old man could move so quickly.
Then again, someone who had survived in this world for decades probably hadn’t done it by being slow.
The gun fired.
Yohan threw himself backward and dove behind a nearby couch.
Helen pulled Izumi away from the office entrance and took cover behind the corner.
"Hatoru, drop the gun and come out with your hands on your head! This is the Deputy Inspector of the Police Department!" Helen shouted as she briefly leaned out.
She was immediately met with gunfire, forcing her back behind cover.
"I can’t believe he’d open fire when his own granddaughter is standing out here," she muttered through gritted teeth.
"How do I know it’s really you?" Hatoru called back calmly. "I haven’t seen any identification, and I have every right to defend myself."
"We’ve known each other for years, you bastard," Helen snapped. "But it doesn’t matter. That gun is illegal. We’re officially opening an investigation into you, which gives us the authority to search all your properties."
"Is that supposed to be a threat?" Hatoru asked with a chuckle.
"Grandpa, why are you doing this?" Izumi called out, her voice breaking.
"Izumi, my dear, one day you’ll understand that everything I’ve done was for you."
"Keep telling yourself that," Jenna said from the other side of the room. "You’re just a man willing to do anything for money, even if it means killing children."
Hatoru’s face twisted with rage.
He fired.
"No!"
Jenna’s mother threw herself in front of her daughter.
By then, Yohan had already ripped the blade out of his wrist and taken a mouthful of healing elixir to stop the bleeding.
The moment he saw Hatoru fire at Jenna, he charged.
Hatoru immediately switched targets and opened fire.
Yohan dodged each shot, weaving through the room with terrifying precision. Before Hatoru could react, Yohan drove a powerful kick into the massive desk.
The heavy table slammed into Hatoru’s chest and sent him crashing to the floor.
The gun flew from his hand.
He desperately reached for it.
A blade plunged through his ankle.
"AAAAHHHH!"
The scream that erupted from Hatoru was almost inhuman.
But Yohan wasn’t finished.
He grabbed the hand still stretching toward the gun and bent it backward until it snapped.
Another scream echoed through the office.
And in that moment, Yohan realized something.
He was enjoying this.
Not because Hatoru deserved it.
Not because he wanted justice.
He simply enjoyed hearing him scream.
"Yohan, that’s enough."
Helen stepped into the room with her pistol drawn, sweat running down the side of her face.
"You’re going to shoot me?" Yohan asked without looking away from Hatoru.
Izumi stood beside Helen, tears streaming down her face as she stared at both her grandfather and Yohan.
"Please," she cried. "That’s enough!"
"Yohan, she’s right," Helen said. "Do the right thing. Let me handle this."
Yohan looked down at Hatoru.
The old man was sobbing now, looking less like a criminal mastermind and more like a broken old man.
The truth was, Yohan wasn’t even that angry about his parents anymore.
He had accepted their deaths long ago.
What he had come here for was justice.
And for the first time since entering this room, he actually considered listening to Helen.
Then he looked up.
Jenna was staring at him.
Tears streamed down her face.
She mouthed two words.
"Do it."
