Chapter 66: Someone to Lean On
"Don’t worry. Since I’ve decided to do this, I’m not afraid of arguing with him." Laura patted Jessie’s hand, signaling her not to worry.
"No, I’m taking you back." Jessie picked up the backpack from the sofa.
She knew William’s personality very well, so she just could not let Laura go back alone with Luke; it left her feeling uneasy.
Seeing her insistence, Laura couldn’t say much and had to agree.
"Jessie, I’ve thought it through. If I really end up divorcing your stepdad and taking Luke with me, I might need more of your help in the future."
But this was only temporary. Laura believed in her own abilities and was confident she could stand up again.
Hearing this, Jessie felt even more heartbroken. "Mom, what are you saying? How could I ever leave you if you needed help? Kevin also said he would help with anything, anytime."
Laura nodded gently, her voice soft. "Truth be told, Kevin is a very trustworthy person. You must cherish your relationship with him. A woman needs to have her own career and never believe a man’s sweet talk about taking care of you. Understand? Only by holding your own financial power can you have confidence."
She had gone through this herself. Despite having a good career back then, she had given it up for William. Now, she regretted it deeply.
"Don’t worry, Mom," Jessie agreed, understanding this well herself.
When they reached downstairs, Jessie hugged Luke and walked Laura inside, wary that William might get physical with Laura.
If he dared to lay a hand on her, she would fight them back tooth and nail.
