Chapter 47: Argument
William had agreed verbally, but he looked down on Kevin’s job from the bottom of his heart. He was just a lousy repairman; what was there to flaunt?
"Mom, don’t be angry. He can’t do anything to me anyway. There’s some fruit in the fridge. I’ll get it."
He said as he headed to the fridge, just in time to see Laura holding Luke and heading back to the bedroom.
He immediately called out to her, "The dishes on the table haven’t been cleaned up yet. Where are you going? Clean them up before you leave."
She turned to look at him and said calmly, "Didn’t you say we should settle everything clearly in the future? I paid for most of the gifts you bought last time and Luke’s injury expenses, as well as the ingredients and fruits for today’s dinner. We need to account for all of these.
"If we are to be clear about everything, then let’s be fair about it. I have washed the dishes for my portion of the meal. Your family’s share, you can wash them yourself. If you don’t have the time, then just forget it. It’s none of my business if you’re willing to use dirty dishes."
Her voice wasn’t loud, but it was enough for everyone in the living room to hear.
William acted so clear-headed with Laura because his family didn’t want her to take too much advantage of him. Little did they expect that she would be the one to insist on settling everything in a clear manner with him now.
On the other hand, William’s pride was hurt. For her to challenge him in front of so many people was simply intolerable.
He immediately rolled up his sleeves, intending to give her a good talking-to. However, Evelyn rushed over to grab his arm.
