Chapter 42: Complaining
Lilian seemed to understand something, looking at Jessie helplessly as she said, "Don’t tell me you brought up the divorce again when Mr. Harper apologized to you just now."
Jessie didn’t care and replied, "Of course; I need to be clear on such things."
After saying that, she fell silent as she came to realize her words might have been too harsh earlier.
Lilian sighed, shaking her head. "I bet Mr. Harper left angrily. Even though you both agreed to divorce in half a year, can’t you just try? What if you manage to develop feelings? Besides, if he truly didn’t care, there would have been no reason for him to come over, apologize, and give you gifts."
"His willingness to lower his guard shows you mean something to him."
Lilian had great faith in Jessie’s charm. They only had half a year, but she believed Kevin would fall for her in no time at all.
Listening to her friend’s advice, Jessie lowered her head, examining the blue gem.
"After all, I’m just holding the title of his wife for now. Nobody knows what will happen later. Plus, I don’t want to owe him too much. But he is indeed better than my stepdad; he helps me out with tasks and covers most of the big expenses without calculating too much with me.
"But this necklace... I really don’t dare to wear it. It looks extraordinarily expensive. I’m afraid of getting robbed while wearing it; it almost feels like wearing it might weigh my whole body down."
Lilian nodded, respecting Jessie’s decision. "It’s good that you don’t like owing people. And didn’t Mr. Harper initially misunderstand you as a scheming woman? You returning the necklace to him is a great way to prove him wrong."
Since Kevin doubted her friend, showing it through actions was the best response.
Jessie nodded before asking curiously, “You’ve been coming over a lot recently. Didn’t Steve give you any work?”
