Chapter 13: Are You Jealous?
Kevin’s eyes darkened slightly as he looked at Jessie, his gaze carrying a hint of scrutiny.
‘Is this woman... testing me?’
He chuckled. "What are you dreaming about? If I were a member of the Harper family, would I still have to do this kind of manual labor?"
Hearing this, Jessie sighed in relief and patted her chest. "Oh, that’s good to know."
Her reaction confused Kevin. Most people would hope to climb up the social ladder, so why was she relieved?
Out of curiosity, Kevin raised an eyebrow and asked, "You seem like you don’t want me to be related to the Harper family."
Jessie didn’t avoid his gaze and nodded directly, answering with a wry smile.
"I would feel uneasy if you were. After all, the Harper family is the richest in Grace City, and ordinary people like us can’t be close to such a big family.
"And, let me tell you, people from wealthy families have the most rules at home with no freedom at all. When I was buying groceries before, I heard from a lady that her distant relative got married to a rich man. Although her life was good, her husband changed women every day. There is a saying out there that seems to be true; men grow more wicked with money."
Jessie continued while clicking her tongue, unaware of Kevin’s darkening expression.
“Who said men grow more wicked with money? Not all families are like that," Kevin said sternly.
In his family, his grandfather valued harmony the most and didn’t like too many rules. Besides, the Harpers strictly forbid infidelity and having mistresses outside. If they were caught, there would be severe consequences according to family rules.
