Chapter 337: _Phase Two
Kyren’s POV
*****
He almost regretted not following Elian and Lucian to the border camps.
Almost.
The next phase of his plan to force Arcadia and his mother’s hands into doing something that would escalate the war was full-blown chaotic.
If the young Alpha King found out what he planned he would be furious. But Kyren didn’t care. Once all this was over his dear half-cousin would understand that in war some things were necessary.
"Is everything set?" He asked Farrell calmly, sipping a glass of wine in a private room in the Lunarian palace.
He had one leg crossed on top of the other, his free hand wiggling occasionally, shifting a projection of bright red constellations in front of him.
The room was dark, the only illumination coming from the light show and his crimson eyes.
"Yes, my lord," Farrell responded to the communication bracelet. "Everything is in position. They’re just waiting for your command."
A cold smirk played on the Rogue King’s mouth. "You have my command then," he murmured, clenching the fist he used in creating the constellation. That dispelled it, letting him concentrate on something else. "I’m heading there now to oversee things."
One would think this plan involved Kyren going physically to the border camps.
Far from it.
As he hung up the communication bracelet, he dragged in a light breath. His eyes fluttered shut, his mind entering a trance-like state.
Then—his eyes opened, brighter than ever and reflecting an entirely different scenery. Tents. Drones moving about with supplies. Despondent expressions laced on the faces of those moving around.
"Here we go..." he heaved, locking on to his target. "Show me what’s happening. Through your eyes..."
.
.
Kyren’s consciousness slipped into the body of a random male witch among the refugees. The man was donned in a dull yellow blazer, with golden brown skin and a handsome face.
But his body was lacking.
The Rogue king could feel how weak he was by just clenching his fists. Plus, he only had an Ascendant-level mana core.
"This should do," he mumbled through the man’s mouth, taking full control of his body. "I’m only here to observe."
The refugee camp was actually just an open space spreading over tens of acres. It had hundreds of simple tents, each large enough to accommodate an entire family of witches.
The night air was cool and alive with the smell of dinner being prepared from different tents and medications being administered to the injured.
A wall surrounded the place, with Lunarian guards patrolling the perimeter already.
"That was fast." Kyren was impressed. "The refugees only came in tonight and Lunaria already has all this prepared."
A shame their hard work was about to be ruined.
Soon enough, he noticed a woman some metres ahead of him clutching her head. Not in pain. But like she was trying to fight off a sudden urge that wasn’t hers.
All around the camp, about fifteen people, each at least an Ascendant cored witch, got this same reaction. One command flowed into their heads:
’Attack every traitor to the High Matron.’
The execution was simple.
Other than implanting the knowledge of the High Matron being the Dark Hand’s leader, his charm also latched onto a select few. Making them seem like ’spies’ sent by Arcadia. Sent to purge those spoiling the High Matron’s name.
Once something as heinous as that happens in a foreign nation’s territory—
"AHH!" A woman’s cry ripped through the camp.
Kyren’s neck snapped in that direction just in time to witness a man attack another man. His eyes were detached. Cold. With the bloodlust of a war assassin.
Perfect.
The assailant raised both hands, creating sharp vines that pierced through the arm of the man he was attacking. He turned his gaze to the woman who screamed, saying a spell that made vines wrap around her face and lifted her into the air.
Just like that, chaos exploded throughout the camp.
The fifteen chosen ’spies’ went on an attacking spree, using magic to give calculated attacks on victims. Not enough to kill—Kyren didn’t want a total blood bath. But enough to cause serious damage and alert the Lunarian soldiers.
"Halt!"
"What’s going on?!"
"They’re attacking each other?"
Kyren—through the body of the man he possessed—recalled another thing this phase of the charm was supposed to cause. He chuckled when a synchronised yell echoed through the camp.
"Protect the High Matron’s holiness!"
Hmph.
’Holiness’ his pale ass.
As expected, the Lunarian soldiers pulled out weapons and began trying to apprehend the attackers. Others didn’t have that reservation, shooting down a few.
One of the assailants rushed up to him, her hands alight with magic. But all he did was angle his head to her, stopping her in her tracks.
"Stop!" A Lunarian soldier boomed behind her.
The sound of a laser pistol tore through the air. The woman’s eyes bulged, the light of her magic dying. Her true memories came back as she gawked at Kyren, as if expecting an explanation.
"I’m sorry." Was all he said while he watched her fall to her knees. When she plopped face-first to the grass-laden floor, Kyren sighed.
Casualties were expected from such a plan. In fact, decades ago he wouldn’t have minded sacrificing the entire population of refugees for his plan.
But...something felt different now.
He didn’t know if it was guilt... it couldn’t be. But a part of him thought that maybe this wasn’t necessary. Maybe he could’ve waited longer.
’Of course,’ he sniggered mentally, eyes lifting to the clouds above. ’It’s you, little flame. Messing with my non-existent morality as always.’
Within the next few seconds, a sky craft descended from the clouds. Golden. With the crest of the Stormborn family on its side.
Definitely the craft Lucian and Elian were using to come here.
"It’s the Alpha King!" One of the Lunarian soldiers exclaimed from another part of the camp.
"Find and round up the attackers!"
When the craft landed in an open space, Kyren’s head tilted. As far as he was concerned... This phase of the plan was a success.
There was no way Lucian or all of Lunaria would ignore something like this. Not when it seemed like Arcadia itself sent spies to annihilate their own citizens in Lunarian soil—simply to cover up a secret.
"Let’s see how this goes." He took a few steps back into the tent behind him.
As he did, a ramp unfurled at the side of the sky craft. The first to rush down with his hand on the railing was his little flame.
Elian.
Even from this distance, Kyren noticed the glow of his violet eyes. The Omega scanned the campgrounds, the chaos and smoke rising into the sky.
Then, unexpectedly, his eyes met Kyren’s despite the distance. The Rogue king stiffened like a rat caught stealing. This wasn’t his body but for some reason it felt like Elian recognised him.
’Time to scram.’ he blinked once, his consciousness travelling back to his original body in an instant.
