Chapter 476: Mutual Growth
The morning sun rose over the training ground, casting long shadows across the scarred earth. Nero and Khione stood facing each other, their bodies still humming with the exertion of the previous days. The air was cool, carrying the scent of dew and freshly turned soil. Neither spoke. Words were unnecessary.
Khione’s eyes burned with a fierce determination. She had lost too many matches. She refused to lose again. Nero, using only his Law of Water, was fighting with one hand tied behind his back. If she could not win against him in this state, she would never catch up. She had to win. She would win.
Nero read her resolve in the set of her jaw, the fire in her gaze. He understood. But he would not be lenient. He would push her, test her, force her to grow. That was what she needed.
They began. Today sparring session more brutal than the last.
°°°
Khione raised her wand, and the temperature plummeted. The ground beneath her feet crackled with frost, spreading outward like a living thing. Nero settled into his stance, his sword held loose, a thin layer of water shimmering along its length. His sword aura gleamed with a faint bluish light, calm and fluid.
"[Glacial Surge.]"
A wave of ice erupted from Khione’s wand, a cascading avalanche of frozen fury. It rushed toward him, towering, unstoppable. Nero did not retreat. He stepped forward, his sword tracing a wide arc.
"[Tidal Barrier.]"
Water rose from the ground, forming a wall of liquid that met the avalanche head-on. The impact was explosive, ice and water colliding in a shroud of steam. Nero moved through the mist, his sword already swinging.
"[Frostbite Blade.]"
Ice formed along his sword, extending the blade, giving him reach. He struck at Khione, the frozen edge slicing through the air. She parried with her wand, a shield of ice forming at the last moment. The impact sent shockwaves through the ground, cracking the earth beneath them.
She countered. "[Permafrost Spear.]"
A lance of ice shot from her wand, aimed at his chest. He twisted, the spear passing inches from his body, and answered with a sweep of his sword. "[Water Whip.]"
A tendril of liquid extended from his blade, lashing toward her. She leaped, the whip passing beneath her, and landed on a pillar of ice she had summoned moments before. She raised her wand, and the sky above them darkened.
"[Frozen Rain.]"
Hundreds of ice shards rained down from above, sharp and deadly. Nero raised his sword, water swirling around him in a protective dome. The shards struck the dome and shattered, deflected by the spinning liquid. He held the dome steady, waiting.
When the rain stopped, he dropped the dome and lunged. His sword, now coated in a layer of ice, struck at her with blinding speed. She met his blade with her wand, the impact sending sparks flying. They broke apart, circled, came together again.
"[Frost Wall.]"
"[Tidal Surge.]"
Ice met water. Wall met wave. The ground beneath them cracked and crumbled, unable to withstand the force of their clash. Khione was relentless, her spells growing more powerful, more precise. But Nero was fluid, adapting, flowing around her attacks.
He found an opening. Her wand was extended, a moment too slow. He stepped inside her guard, his sword at her throat.
"[Hydro Blade.]"
She froze, her eyes wide. The match was over. He had won.
Khione rose, her expression unreadable as always. She had lost the first match, but she was not finished. She raised her wand, and the temperature dropped even further. Frost formed on her clothes, her hair, her skin. The air around her began to swirl, a blizzard taking shape.
"[Avalanche Descent.]"
A massive wave of snow and ice erupted from her wand, crashing toward him like a tidal wave of frozen fury. Nero raised his sword, water forming a barrier, but the force was too great. He was pushed back, his boots skidding across the ground.
She pressed her advantage. "[Frozen Domain.]"
The ground beneath his feet froze, ice spreading outward, trapping his legs. He could not move. She raised her wand, and a sphere of ice formed around him, a prison of frozen despair.
He closed his eyes, focusing on the water within him. He felt its flow, its rhythm. He reached out, and the ice prison began to crack.
"[Aqua Burst.]"
Water exploded from his body, shattering the ice. He emerged, his sword blazing with liquid energy, and charged. She met him with a barrage of ice spears, each one aimed with deadly precision. He deflected them with his sword, water spinning in a protective sheath.
"[Ice Mirror.]"
A wall of ice formed before her, reflecting his image back at him. He struck it, and the ice shattered, but she was already gone. She appeared behind him, her wand pressed against his back.
"[Frost Touch.]"
Ice spread from her wand, encasing him in a layer of frozen death. He struggled, but the ice held him fast. She stepped in front of him, her expression calm.
"[Icebound.]"
Then the match was hers.
°°°
They stood facing each other, both breathing hard, both determined. The training ground was a frozen wasteland, the ground covered in ice, the air thick with cold mist. They had each won a match. This would decide it.
Khione raised her wand, and the blizzard began.
"[Storm of a Thousand Blades.]"
Ice formed into a storm of jagged shards, each one aimed at Nero. He raised his sword, water forming a barrier, but the shards were too many, too fast. He was forced to retreat, his barrier weakening.
He made a decision. He dropped his defense and charged. His sword blazed with blue light, water and ice combining into a single, devastating edge. "[Torrential Strike.]"
He struck at her with everything he had. She met his blade with her wand, ice forming a shield. The impact was cataclysmic, the ground beneath them shattering. They stood locked in battle, their weapons crossed, their eyes locked.
Khione pushed harder, and Nero felt himself being forced back. He gritted his teeth, pouring more power into his blade. The water around him began to freeze, forming a layer of ice along his sword.
"[Glacial Edge.]"
His blade, now a weapon of solid ice, struck with renewed force. Khione’s shield cracked, and she was thrown back. She landed hard, her wand skittering across the frozen ground.
Nero stood over her, his sword raised. He looked down at her, his expression calm, his breathing steady.
He lowered his blade.
The match was his.
They lay together amidst the frozen wasteland, their bodies spent, their breaths misting in the cold air. The sky above was clear, the stars beginning to appear. They did not speak. There was no need.
She had won two matches. He had won one. She had proven herself, had pushed him to his limits, had shown that she was catching up. He was proud of her.
He reached over and took her hand, his fingers interlacing with hers. She squeezed back, a silent acknowledgment.
They lay there, side by side, the frozen ground beneath them, the stars above them. They had pushed each other to their limits, had grown stronger together. And tomorrow, they would do it again.
The competition was drawing closer. But they were ready, this was going to be extremely fun both were certain, whatever awaits them in the future, together they shall overcome it.
