Chapter 668 - 666 I don’t recognize [3rd update]
At this moment, his gaze finally fell upon the boy.
He saw that the boy was very sunny, and standing next to Sophia Bennett, they made a great pair. They looked happy and blissful.
He also saw that the boy was holding a snack in his right hand with an ice cream, and after Sophia Bennett had taken his arm, she stopped walking, then turned around, looked up at the boy, and said something unknown.
Immediately afterward, the boy scooped a spoonful of ice cream and brought it to Sophia Bennett’s mouth, and she opened her mouth and finished off the ice cream.
In an instant, Christopher Scott felt a pang in his heart, suddenly feeling his chest hurt so much it suffocated him as if a thick, sturdy rope was tied around his heart, pulling it hard and squeezing it into two, making him feel like he was on the edge of life’s end.
Christopher Scott fixed his gaze on Sophia, watching as the man fed her another mouthful of ice cream, seeing her stuff the snacks cradled in her arms into the boy’s mouth, seeing her face light up with an exceptionally bright smile after hearing the boy speak.
That smile of Sophia’s was vaguely familiar to Christopher Scott, yet it also felt so foreign.
In the past, Sophia often smiled at him, and when his gaze inadvertently fell on her, she always smiled sweetly, but he always coldly looked away, never giving her any response.
He realized he longed for Sophia’s smile, wished she would stick to him like before.
However, reality told him he could never go back, could never possess that girl’s sunlight-like love again.
Christopher Scott’s heart ached so much, and suddenly he felt weak in his limbs, completely powerless, his eyes sore and uncomfortable.
A moment later, a bitter smile appeared on his lips, gradually turning into a sarcastic one.
He was mocking himself, mocking love, all those notions about everlasting love, eternal loyalty, reaching the ends of the earth - they were all jokes.
Seven Murray once said she would love him forever, accompany him till the end of time, go with him to the ends of the earth, but she ended up with Ian Hobbs.
Sophia Bennett once said she really liked him and must pursue him, but in just a few short days, someone new was by her side.
Christopher Scott thought of those ephemeral promises and felt he was a joke, a joke that had never known love.
He watched the love between Sophia and the man, feeling even worse than seeing Seven Murray with Ian Hobbs.
Christopher Scott questioned himself, What was wrong with him? Why was he feeling sad about Sophia? Didn’t he dislike her? Since Sophia had a new target, shouldn’t he be happy? Why did he feel as if he had already died?
Unknowingly, Christopher Scott realized he had long been poisoned by Sophia, who had moved in unceremoniously when she drove Seven Murray out of his heart, and had already occupied his heart.
During his toughest times, it was her tireless companionship that got him through;
When he felt hopeless about life, she’d inexplicably be by his side, pulling him out of his despair.
When he felt lonely, it was she who filled his inbox with messages, giving him something to get through those gloomy days.
But then, she suddenly left, disappeared silently, gone from his life without a trace. If it weren’t for the chance encounter at the department store today, who knows when they’d meet again.
Christopher Scott looked at Sophia, who was approaching him more closely, and felt like fleeing. He didn’t want Sophia to see him so lost, so down; more so, he didn’t want her to see that he cared about her, really cared.
However, as he turned to leave, Madam Scott quickly grabbed him, exclaiming, "Christopher, that girl really seems to be Sophia Bennett. She cut her hair. Look at the boy next to her. Do you know him?"
Madam Scott thought her words were inconsequential, not knowing she was rubbing salt into her son’s wound. She was unaware that her son had feelings for Sophia.
Christopher, listening to his mother’s questions, took a deep breath, trying to calm his emotions, and said coolly, "I don’t know him."
"Well, look at her, it is Sophia Bennett, right? I didn’t expect her to get a boyfriend so soon. Oh! You missed out on such a good girl," Madam Scott lamented Sophia’s departure.
"Mom, I’m heading back to the office." Christopher couldn’t bear to stay any longer; he feared his heart wouldn’t be able to handle it. His emotions told him he couldn’t accept Sophia being with another boy.
"Don’t go! Sophia has already seen us. She’s smiling at us. Even if you don’t like her, don’t be so petty! It doesn’t hurt to say hi." Madam Scott, noticing Sophia looking at them, quietly whispered to Christopher.
At this point, even if Christopher wanted to leave, he couldn’t.
Thus, he reluctantly stayed.
When he looked up at Sophia, she was also looking at him. Their gazes met, and Sophia nodded slightly at Christopher with a polite smile, as if she had truly forgotten the story of chasing after him.
Christopher, looking at her composed smile, felt an inexplicable pain in his heart, a suffering so intense it nearly killed him.
Yet, he still forced a smile for Sophia.
Sophia observed Christopher’s awkward smile and his slightly reddened eyes, and she felt a strange discomfort, thinking Christopher was disdainful of her and was unwilling to see her, which is why he reluctantly smiled at her.
At that moment, Sophia couldn’t help but recall her relentless pursuit of Christopher and suddenly felt even more awkward, thinking that had she known she would run into him at the department store today, nothing would have compelled her to go out; she’d have stayed in bed with Maya Spencer.
Although extremely awkward, she had to maintain composure to prevent the atmosphere from becoming increasingly uncomfortable.
Therefore, she quickly shifted her gaze from Christopher to Madam Scott and said with a smile, "Good afternoon, Auntie!"
"Sophia, you cut your long hair! What a pity, but short hair is nice too. You look like a high school student, so fresh-faced and vibrant." Madam Scott had always liked Sophia, and she felt quite sorry for how Christopher treated her.
"Yes! I’d kept the long hair for too long, so I wanted to try a new hairstyle." Sophia explained with a sweet smile on her lips.
Actually, even without her explanation, it was clear to everyone: she cut her long hair only to sever her feelings for Christopher and start anew.
Moreover, she had succeeded. Since sending that goodbye message to Christopher, she had never pursued him again, avoiding places where Christopher might be as much as possible, so as not to disgust him or make him feel troubled.
Listening to Sophia’s explanation, Madam Scott’s gaze fell on the boy standing beside her.
Madam Scott scrutinized the boy, who looked very handsome, sunny, and pretty, seeming a few years younger than Christopher. Standing together with Sophia, they were indeed a match made in heaven, quite pleasing to the eye.
