Chapter 1485: The General
The next day, Erend originally planned to spend his time relaxing at home while contacting Eccar, Aesa, and Sylven about the information Veyrun had discovered. He intended to discuss the Dragonborn legacies with them and perhaps arrange their next destination together.
Unfortunately, things did not go according to plan.
Early in the morning, Captain Adrien arrived at his house carrying a message from General Lennard himself. The General had summoned Erend to the military base immediately.
Considering how long he had been absent from his duties, Erend could hardly refuse the order.
Although he had left one of his clones behind to perform his responsibilities while traveling across other worlds, General Lennard had always been aware of that arrangement.
More importantly, the summons did not appear to concern his duties as an ordinary soldier. It seemed that the General wished to speak to him directly in his capacity as one of the military’s highest-ranking assets.
At the very least, Erend felt that General Lennard deserved enough respect for him to appear in person.
So, after changing into his military uniform, Erend decided to go with Adrien to the military base. Billy had also joined them in the car.
Before long, the familiar military compound came into view.
Despite spending so much time away from this world, Erend found the sight strangely nostalgic. Military personnel moved busily throughout the base while soldiers conducted their daily duties as usual.
The moment Erend, Adrien, and Billy stepped out of the vehicle, several younger soldiers and recent recruits immediately straightened their posture and saluted respectfully.
Soldiers holding ranks lower than theirs naturally followed military protocol while those of equal rank simply greeted them with nods or casual expressions of acknowledgment.
Erend returned their greetings before walking deeper into the military compound.
Eventually, Billy and Adrien separated from him and headed toward their lockers and respective duties. Meanwhile, Erend proceeded directly toward General Lennard’s office.
Standing before the familiar door, Erend took a moment to straighten his uniform before knocking politely.
"Enter."
The deep voice from inside immediately answered.
Erend opened the door and stepped into the office.
Behind the large desk sat General Lennard. The middle-aged man remained as imposing as ever with his tall and muscular build. Years of military experience had carved an unmistakable commanding presence into his demeanor. Even while sitting quietly behind his desk, he exuded the aura of a man accustomed to making difficult decisions that affected countless lives.
General Lennard silently observed Erend as he approached before stopping in front of the desk and performing a proper military salute.
"Sit down."
"Yes, sir."
Erend lowered himself onto the chair before letting out a small sigh of relief.
"How have you been?" General Lennard asked.
"I’m fine, sir," Erend replied.
The General studied him silently for several moments as though trying to determine just how much was hidden behind those simple words.
"I’m glad that you’ve returned safely. I truly am," General Lennard finally said. "You’ve been gone for quite some time this time around. Even if your clone remained here and continued performing your duties, it still doesn’t truly fill your position."
Erend frowned slightly. "Has something happened, General?"
The General’s words made it sound as though some major incident had occurred during his absence.
Adrien and Billy had not mentioned anything particularly alarming to him. Either they had not been informed themselves, or General Lennard possessed the only authority to discuss the matter with him.
General Lennard’s expression gradually became grim.
He leaned back slightly in his chair before turning his gaze toward the large window overlooking the military base outside.
"Something happened out there," he said quietly. "A mysterious organization has recently appeared, and we believe it possesses the potential to become a terrorist movement."
That certainly did not sound good.
Erend had not expected to receive such news immediately upon returning to this world.
However, another thought quickly surfaced in his mind.
Could he realistically spare any time dealing with this issue when he would soon need to leave once again in search of the Dragonborn legacies?
Fortunately, General Lennard continued speaking before Erend could ask the question himself.
"However, you don’t need to worry too much. This organization is well within our capabilities to handle. Our military is not weak, after all." The General smiled faintly before continuing. "More importantly, we now possess the Special Operations Unit led by Captain Adrien Boartusk. The unit consists entirely of individuals who successfully completed the Magic Assimilation Project. In simpler terms, it is a military unit composed of Magic users."
Hearing that immediately relieved Erend.
The members of the Magic Assimilation Project had all undergone rigorous training and possessed combat capabilities far beyond those of ordinary soldiers.
Combined with Adrien’s leadership and Billy’s participation, they should be more than capable of handling conventional supernatural threats.
General Lennard noticed the subtle relief appearing on Erend’s face and chuckled softly.
"You don’t need to worry that I’m planning to keep you here instead of allowing you to fulfill your duties in other worlds."
Erend smiled sheepishly after realizing his thoughts had been completely exposed.
"General, I apologize for not being able to properly fulfill my duties here. I..." He awkwardly scratched his cheek. "I’ve been very busy."
General Lennard’s expression softened considerably. The stern and commanding face that normally intimidated countless soldiers now appeared surprisingly understanding.
"I don’t know what it is that you’re doing in those other worlds, Erend," the General said. "But I know one thing. Whatever it is, it is much bigger than us and much bigger than your duties as a soldier. Do what you need to do. I will handle the matters here. Besides, you’ve already left your clone behind. As far as I’m concerned, that still counts as you fulfilling your responsibilities."
"Thank you for understanding, sir."
General Lennard nodded before asking another question. "Will you be leaving again soon?"
Erend’s expression immediately became more serious. "Yes, sir."
He intentionally did not elaborate further.
The General simply stared at him for several moments before slowly nodding in understanding. "I see."
He leaned forward slightly and rested his arms upon his desk.
"Then you may go. I only ask one thing from you. If you ever discover a danger capable of threatening our world again, inform us as soon as possible."
"Yes, sir."
Their conversation ended shortly afterward.
After saluting General Lennard one final time, Erend turned around and quietly left the office.
There were still people in this world who trusted him completely and silently carried their own responsibilities so that he could continue walking his path.
General Lennard was undoubtedly one of them.
