The Devil's Son and His Fated Bride

Chapter 179: A host body for a witch saint.

~Mass Release started.

"No one has found the body, then," Ren murmured to herself, her voice barely rising to a whisper. "Or someone made sure he’d survive."

The puzzle pieces were aligned with this mystery, too perfectly. Yet the sorcerers hadn’t moved to ignite another war. Was it a weakness? No, not likely. If Ren had to choose, she’d wager on the second possibility: hidden hands, manipulating each thread from the shadows. Victor could be another pawn.

"Are the witches trying to bring back Nimoieth?"

The question burst from Ren’s lips before she could stop it, slicing through the silence like a knife.

"Yes," Agara responded, his voice calm, but his eyes clouded with something darker. "But they need a host. A strong body that can hold her power without burning alive. She may have lost her flesh, but her spirit... her spirit remains untouched."

A cold twist coiled in Ren’s gut.

"What kind of host?" Kai’s voice cracked like dry wood, low and rough with fury. Each word scraped from his throat as if it cost him pain to speak. He knew the answer.

"We kept asking why Luther wanted Reneira," Agara declared softly. "Now we have our answer. My father ordered us to dismantle Lutherieth’s army, and help humans, and the King of Alvonia must name a new heir to the Ruby Throne. That’s why King Benkin didn’t object when you suggested Gloria."

Agara’s voice carried the weight of a truth not too long hidden. King Benkin hadn’t been allowed to speak of this deal himself, but Agara could.

A heavy pain sank into Ren’s chest. King Benkin, steadfast, and loyal to his people as always, was being quietly betrayed by his nobles. The very royal houses he’d fought beside now plotted to steal the throne, using the victory that might never come over the vampires as their excuse. It was cruel. And it must be crushing him.
