Chapter 27: Looting her privacy
Kai brought a big book out of a chest and placed it on the table. The thickness and weathered leather showcased how old it was, but thankfully, it wasn’t dusty like the rest of the books.
"Here is what you are looking for."
"That’s good!" Ren stood next to him, opened the book, and searched through the contents page. Her eyes tracked every word carefully before stopping at the word Silver.
She grinned with satisfaction, bringing the page up to him. "This can help us when the sun is sealed up behind the clouds."
Kai tilted his head and looked at the topic. "Study of Silver!" He read it out loud.
She nodded and continued while her eyes carefully observed the words. "That day in the lab, we received vampire blood vials from the front line to inspect. My master tried everything you can imagine, but all the results went awry. We thought we had failed. He went out for a while, and I couldn’t accept that the six-month attempt to collect strong elements to defeat the vampire had been futile." She paused as her fingers stopped on one line.
"Their blood is filthy, and silver is sacred."
"How did you find out?"
Ren took out her necklace—a ruby gem between two silver wings. It was small, but big enough for Kai to read the rune on each wing. He narrowed his eyes. "Where did you get this?" He extended his hand and caressed the surface. The lines on his forehead deepened.
"My uncle gave it to me when I was seven. Anyway, as a habit, I used to play with it to calm my nerves and focus. When the chain broke, and as clumsy as I am, the vial slipped from my hand and broke. My necklace fell into that bloody mess, and boom, the blood burned and turned to ash. Can you believe that?"
Kai’s eyes widened. This necklace was made of Fae’s pure silver, and to kill vampires, they didn’t have this much silver. And holy hell, that was expensive and rare!
