Chapter 66 Caught
Quickly, I ducked low, my heart thundering in my chest. ’I can’t get caught now; it will be over for me.’
Footsteps approached rapidly toward where I’d been.
’If you remain here, Ember, you are as good as dead. Run!’
I didn’t think twice; my feet moved on their own. I ran through the garden paths, through tall grass and branches that whipped across my arms. I ducked under a wooden archway and pressed myself against a tree.
I heard the sound of twigs snapping from a few feet away. Cold sweat dripped down my face, my chest burned, and my breath came out ragged.
’I can’t return to the dungeon—not yet. Not without something more solid.’ I peeked from the tree. Allison paced around the space, sniffing the air. Her hazel eyes had turned to gold.
I pulled back into the cover of the tree. ’Okay, I think I need to reach Lydia and Caroline. I need to tell them what I saw. And who knows if they are in danger now because of me.’
When I peeked again, she was heading in my direction. My heart thudded against my ribs. I needed a plan now. A diversion. I looked over my shoulders, and the torches burned fiercely just a few feet away. The werewolves were still patrolling. If I could make it into the open, she wouldn’t attack me, as she was supposed to be asleep now.
With the plan in mind, I dashed towards the open. I ran as fast as my legs could carry me. I glanced back; Allison was already where I had been hiding earlier. The bushes whipped across my face, mist blowing out from my nose.
