Chapter 194 - 194 Plead
Xavier was on his knees, with his head touching the floor.
Star was shocked by that, then she got up and realized what was going on, Xavier had freed her from the spell that held her captive.
She didn't think Xavier would free her, no matter how friendly they were; it was only because she had no other choice. But now he was on his knees, and she wondered why.
"Did you take the spell off me?" Star asked.
"Yes," Xavier simply replied.
"You really did keep your promise, why are you on your knees, what are you playing at?"
"I want you to stay with me for the duration of this war, I don't think I can do this without you, please" Xavier spoke, his head still touching the floor.
"Why do you think I'll accept that, from the looks of it, it seems like your kind would go extinct, I don't like humans and have no interest in helping them, you should have left the spell on and commanded me, wouldn't that be better?" Star asked.
"Having an ally fight with you is better than having a slave who has no choice but to fight for you. You can leave if you want, that's the reason I took the spell off before asking for your help" Xavier spoke as he raised his head.
Star stared at him for a while, her eyes cold and unreadable before she finally spoke. "No."
Xavier didn't move, he knew she was going to refuse, why wouldn't she, why would she fight when it wasn't even her battle?
"You heard me," she continued, crossing her arms as she sat back down on the chair.
"This war, from what I've seen, your side is already losing. I have no reason to throw my life away for humans. You freed me, that's fine, and I won't attack you or any humans, but don't expect me to fight for you."
Silence filled the space, none of them said a word before Xavier slowly looked at her, both of their eyes meeting.
"I know," he said calmly. "We're at a disadvantage. But I'm still going to fight. Win or lose... that's not decided yet."
Star frowned slightly, clearly not expecting that answer, she knew Xavier was powerful but that was on human standards, even though he bested her, she was going to get even stronger in the future.
She scoffed. "You really believe that?"
"Yes," Xavier replied without hesitation.
Her eyes narrowed as she studied him carefully. "I had thought you were strange... but now I'm certain of it. You had control over me, yet you let me go... and now you're begging me to fight for humans"
Xavier didn't respond to that. Instead, he spoke again, his voice calm. "I'm not asking you to fight for humans. I'm asking you to fight with me."
That made her pause, just for a moment. "...There's a difference?"
"Yes," Xavier replied.
Star went silent again, looking away as if thinking it over. After a while, she spoke. "You're still asking me to join a losing side."
"Then help me change that," Xavier said.
Her eyes snapped back to him. He was already on his feet now, standing straight and looking directly at her, his eyes filled with determination.
Star was caught unexpectedly with all of this, she wasn't expecting Xavier to let her go and she had already accepted that since she wasn't really welcomed into her home.
But now this, she could leave if she wanted, but she had nowhere to go, and she also didn't really want to leave.
She clicked her tongue. "...You really don't give up, do you?"
"No."
Another silence followed, longer this time, before she let out a small sigh. "Fine."
Xavier's expression didn't change, but his attention sharpened, he didn't want to get excited by the fact that he had just made the strongest ally he could ask for.
"I'll help you," she continued, "But not for free."
"I expected that," Xavier replied and he waited for her to speak
A slight smirk appeared on her face. "In the future, when I ask you something, you will do it. No matter what it is."
'In the future? She had no idea what she wanted, she just wants me to be indebted to her, there's no problem with that'
"Alright," Xavier replied.
Star blinked, clearly surprised. "You're agreeing that easily?"
"Yes."
She stared at him, trying to see if he was joking, but there was nothing in his expression that suggested it.
"You might regret that."
"I won't, you have nothing to be worried about"
Another brief pause passed before Star turned away slightly. "Then it's a deal."
Xavier let out a small breath. "Thank you."
Star glanced at him from the corner of her eyes. "Don't thank me yet. If you die, this deal means nothing, and if I die, it also means nothing"
Xavier gave a faint smile. "Then neither of us will die"
"I like your confidence, but given the damage done to your kingdom, and the other destroyed kingdom, do you think we stand a chance against whatever you're facing?" Star asked.
"I know a demon queen is behind these attacks, but I have no idea how powerful she is, her spells, or even her appearance" Xavier spoke.
"So we're going in blind, you do know, now that the spell holding me isn't active, I can run away if we start losing"
"A dragon running away from a fight, isn't that ironic" Xavier grinned as he lay down on his bed.
"I want to ask you something, what was the plan if I had refused and gone on my own?"
"There wasn't any, I would continue on my own, I don't really have a choice in the situation" Xavier said still smiling as his eyes were glued to the ceiling.
"You would have died a quick death, are there any humans as powerful as you, all your armies are made up of females and only the generals we met and a handful I saw were above average"
"There are, you just haven't meet them yet"
