The maid who held Avery’s arm grinned, seeing the shocked look she wore. She nodded proudly as she looked around. "Are you shocked? Shocked that this many of us are tired of your bullshit. You think we don’t see you? First, you were taken out of the servants’ quarters and to your own private room. You get to pick and choose whatever chore you want. Now, you warm Alpha Cain’s bed. You really can’t do anything without spreading your damn legs for it, can you? First, you fucked Sir Xander, and now Alpha Cain! At least have some shame, you whore!"
The words cut through the air, each one more venomous than the last. Avery’s face flushed with anger, her fists clenched at her sides as the maid’s words echoed in her mind. She had no idea where this kind of hate had come from.
The maid who had grabbed her wrist grinned, clearly enjoying the effect her insults had on Avery. She leaned in close, her breath hot and rancid as she continued, "I bet you think you’re untouchable now, huh? You think you can just sleep your way to the top, but we all know what you really are. A whore, a plaything for the Alpha." She sneered.
"You come in here drenched in his scent like a whore. You couldn’t have the decency to mask his scent, could you?" She spat out, her eyes filled with disgust.
Avery’s blood boiled, the sting of the word "whore" digging into her like a spear. She jerked her arm free with a forceful tug, the maid’s grip slipping from her wrist as she took a step back.
"Don’t you dare talk about me like that," Avery snapped. "I’ve done nothing but do my work like I should, and what do you do? Is it just my fault if you think lesser of yourself?" Avery spat out bitterly.
The maid looked taken aback, a disbelieving scoff escaped her lips. "What? Are you really talking to me in such a demeaning manner?" She hugged out, turning to look at her minions. "See? I told you all she thinks she’s better than us."
One of the minions stepped forward, her hand crossed over her chest. "Is that really what you think of us? That you’re better than us all because you share Alpha Cain’s bed?"
"What does it matter asking her? She thinks she’s better than us. Thinks she’ll find more favor with Alpha Cain. Do you people not see how she acts? How pompous she’s become? Even to Lady Kendra! She’s turned Alpha against us. It’s all her fault. Ever since she came into this pack. Nothing has gone right for any of us. Now it’s whatever Avery Jae wants."
The other maids began to circle Avery, their eyes hungry with malice, waiting for the inevitable retaliation. One of them sneered, her voice dripping with disgust. "She’s right, though. You’re nothing but a little slut, climbing the ranks on your back. All the other girls might put up with it, but not us. We’re done being quiet while you get everything handed to you."
