"Aniya James! Go to the table number five!" Mr. Ramsey, who was their manager, announced loudly behind the desk.
"Yes, chief!" Aniya tried to ignore the slight pain in her legs. It used to be a lot worse when she started this job six months ago.
Her mother wanted her to start the job when she was sixteen, but God knew why she didn’t send her to this restaurant.
Life had been better since she got this job. It was a high-end place where they used to pay heavy tips.
Her mom Valerie James was happy that at last her girl had started bringing in money. The abuse Aniya had been facing since childhood never diminished.
Her father and mother inflicted pain on her in so many ways that she had almost forgotten how to laugh or smile.
"Take coffee cups to that table, Aniya James," her friend Lisa poked her elbow in her chest. She quickly picked up the tray and carried it to the said table.
Ever since she was hired, she picked everything too quickly. After all, that’s what she had been doing all her life.
Her mom never tried to do her personal chores, nor she was interested in doing house chores. According to her, she adopted Aniya because her husband Alaric James so wanted a baby.
Aniya could never understand why he wanted a baby when he never even batted an eye on her as a father.
Like her mother, he was also an alcoholic who took pleasure in beating her mom. And in return?
