The Veil of Darkness

Chapter 157: Complaints

Annalise listened in silence as Aunt Claire, Sera, Garon, and Mr. Warren, all four of them continued to complain about the Castle and how moody it had been behaving for the past half month during her and the lords’ absence.

"My lady, you can’t leave us here if you decide to leave the castle in the future. Please let us all accompany you so that we don’t have to worry about keeping up with this place." Sera was almost begging with her little doe eyes filled with hope as she looked at her lady.

The smile on Annalise’s lips became bigger as she nodded her head while accepting their requests. She could tell just by looking at their faces how fed up they were because of the castle and its unpredictable nature. "I’m not sure if I’ll ever like to go out on another long journey like this one but if it still happens in the future, I’ll make sure that all four of you will follow us and will not be left behind."

The instant relief that filled their expression made Annalise take a quick look at the walls of the castle as if she was trying to see exactly what sort of horrors it made her attendants experience during her absence.

"My lady, I should be returning to continue with my work. Since the castle seems to be in a cooperating mood right now, I would love to get some work done." Mr. Warren was the first person to stand up and head outside the parlor once he took his leave.

The next person to follow him was none other than Garron who took his leave to go and work in his vegetable garden which he was most excited about showing her. The young boy seemed really proud of whatever magic he had performed with the bunch of seeds that he was trusted with half a month ago.

"Since we are going to have special guests this evening with us, I will go and busy myself in the kitchen to prepare for the evening tea, snacks, and the welcome feast." Aunt Claire stood up too after Garron had left the parlor. It seemed like all of them were ready to return to their daily work since they had got what they wanted.

"Take Sera with you for help. I will also come and join you once I will be done decorating the guest rooms." Annalise told Aunt Claire as she signaled Sera to follow the old woman.

"My lady, you just returned today after a long journey. You should be resting right now. Let us take care of the work." Sera protested as worry for Annalise’s health clearly flickered through her young dark orbs.

"It’s alright, I’m not tired at all. Instead, I’m feeling way more energetic after returning and meeting you all. Besides, the guest rooms and tonight’s feast are very important matters that we can’t slack with. As the lady of the house, it’s my duty to make sure that our guests will be sleeping comfortably in their rooms without the castle playing any tricks on them and also to provide them with the best welcome feast of our ability."

Her words brought smiles to both Sera and Aunt Claire’s faces and there was no doubt that the latter two felt really proud of Annalise at that moment. "You are now talking like the true lady of the house." Aunt Claire commented with an encouraging nod.

"My lady seems to have changed for the better during this trip. There’s a new brightness surrounding you... You look more confident, stronger, happier, and somehow even more gentle than before if that’s even possible." Sera added to Aunt Claire’s praise and almost made Annalise feel embarrassed.
