The Veil of Darkness

Chapter 114: Last Breath

Annalise didn’t even know what she was doing as she hurriedly crouched down beside the creature that seemed like a snow lion but with wings.

Her hands moved to touch it but Damien was there to stop her before she could have made the mistake. "Annalise!" He seemed almost pained as he called her in a warning tone. "You just suffered an attack from the dark energy and this creature was also infected with it. You shouldn’t be coming anywhere near it."

She could feel his worry for her through their bond but she couldn’t avoid the dying creature either. "Didn’t the black energy already leave its body?" She asked and looked around at her husbands for an answer.

Valerius crouched down on her other side as he nodded his head in response to her question before speaking, "It did but that doesn’t mean this creature is safe already. Besides, it’s dying, Annalise, let’s give it some peace in its last moments."

Annalise shook her head as something inside her refused to leave the poor creature in its current state. She had always carried a soft heart for animals throughout her life and if she watched one dying in front of her very eyes especially when it looked so innocent and helpless, she would hate herself for abandoning it.

"Annalise..." She heard Damien calling her name and it seemed like he was torn between shouting at her and staying calm to make her understand. "Wife, no matter how bad you feel right now, there is nothing that can be done. Let’s go." He said while pulling on her hand to make her stand up but she refused and pulled her hand out of his hold.

"I can’t..." She replied with another shake of her head, her eyes were burning with punished tears as her vision became blurry. "I need to save it..."

"And how the hell are you going to do that?" Damien was seriously at the end of his patience, the fear of losing her to the dark energy was punching him in his guts. He didn’t want to experience the same horrible feeling again when she was attacked by the dark energy.

"Damien..." Valerius spoke up as he pointed his attention at his brother. "Let her..." His voice carried some sort of commanding power in it but at the same time, there was also an assurance in it that he won’t let anything go wrong this time.

Annalise felt him resting his hand over her shoulder before he spoke to her. "Go on, Annalise. It only has a couple of minutes left." That was all that she needed to do what her soul was trying to make her do but she still quickly glanced at Damien. The man didn’t say anything but he didn’t try to stop her either.
