Ascension of the Eternal Game

Chapter 14: Heart of the Crystal

The Crystal Caverns trembled as the guardian charged, its crystalline scales glinting with a sickly sheen under the glow of mana-rich stalactites. Alex Kain tightened his grip on his sword, the blade's cold steel a lifeline against the chaos. The beast's roar shook the chamber, a sound like shattering glass and grinding stone, its corrupted eyes blazing with shadow-tainted fury. Lyra Vex stood at his left, her sword raised, her red hair plastered to her sweat-slicked face. Kael flanked his right, daggers spinning in his hands, his lean frame poised for a strike.

Alex's heart pounded, Mikey's tattered cloak—a scrap of faded green caught on a crystal spike—burning in his vision. His brother had been here, so close, and this beast stood between them. Failure wasn't an option.

"Spread out!" Lyra shouted, her voice cutting through the din. "We can't take it head-on!"

The guardian lunged, its massive claws raking the air where they'd stood a heartbeat before. Alex dove left, rolling across the jagged floor, crystals crunching beneath him. The air was thick with mana, a buzzing weight that made his skin tingle and his head ache. He scrambled to his feet, raising the wayfinder crystal he'd synthesized into Radiant Beacon. Its light flared, a beam of pure mana slicing through the cavern's gloom, striking the beast's flank.

The guardian shrieked, its shadowy tendrils sizzling as the light burned them away, but its crystalline hide resisted, the corruption retreating only slightly. It whirled toward Alex, jaws snapping, and he barely ducked under a swipe that shattered a nearby stalactite into glittering shards.

Lyra darted in, her sword slashing at the beast's legs, sparks flying where steel met crystal. "It's too tough!" she yelled, dodging a retaliatory swipe. "We need to hit the core!"

Kael darted through the shadows, his daggers seeking weak points. "There—its chest!" he called, pointing to a pulsing, dark-veined crystal embedded in the guardian's torso, glowing with a sickening mix of mana and shadow.

Alex's mind raced. His Radiant Beacon could weaken it, but he needed something stronger to crack that core. He had Inferno Claw, a fiery slashing attack born from Savage Bite and Fireball, and Flame Slash for broader strikes. Could he merge them with the wayfinder's purity? He focused, mana surging through him like a river breaking its banks.

Synthesis Attempted: Inferno Claw + Radiant Beacon

A tense pause stretched, his breath held—then the spark ignited.

Synthesis Successful! New Skill: Purifying Inferno
