Ascension of the Eternal Game

Chapter 13: Echoes of the Past

The Crystal Caverns loomed before them, a gaping wound in the earth framed by jagged stone and gnarled roots that twisted like skeletal fingers. A faint hum vibrated through the air, the pulse of mana-rich crystals buried deep within. Alex Kain paused at the entrance, his breath catching as the damp, musty scent of the caves washed over him. Behind him, Lyra Vex adjusted the grip on her sword, her green eyes narrowing as she scanned the shadows, while Kael crouched low, his fingers sifting through the dirt for any sign of recent passage.

Alex's chest tightened with a mix of hope and dread. Mikey—his foster brother, the one he'd sworn to find—had been here. Raven, their informant from Eldergrove, had pointed them to these caverns, whispering of a party that had ventured inside seeking mana crystals. Mikey's trail had grown cold, but this was the first solid lead in weeks. Alex could almost hear his brother's laugh echoing in the distance, a memory that drove him forward.

"Keep your wits about you," Kael said, his voice a low rasp nearly lost in the drip of water echoing from the depths. "These tunnels are a labyrinth. One misstep, and we're done."

Lyra nodded, her expression grim. "And that's not the worst of it. The miners we passed—they said something's stirring down here. Something that doesn't like visitors."

Alex's hand drifted to his sword, the weight of it grounding him. He'd fought shadow creatures and outsmarted bandits, but the Crystal Caverns felt different—alive, almost, with a presence that pressed against his skin. The mana in the air was so thick it made his head buzz, a sensation both exhilarating and unsettling.

They stepped inside, the daylight fading behind them, swallowed by the cavern's maw. The walls glowed with clusters of blue and purple crystals, their light casting eerie patterns across the stone. The tunnels branched in every direction, each path a gamble into the unknown. Alex closed his eyes, focusing inward. His Skill Synthesis ability was his edge—letting him combine skills into something new. He had Night Vision to pierce the dark and Mana Sense to feel the flow of energy. If he could merge them...

A familiar spark flared in his mind.

Synthesis Successful! New Skill: Mana Sight

Mana Sight: Allows the user to see mana flows and detect hidden paths or creatures. Cost: 10 Mana per minute.

A faint smile tugged at his lips. "I've got something," he said, activating the skill. His vision shifted, the cavern exploding into vibrant streams of color. The crystals blazed like beacons, and wisps of mana trailed through the air, marking recent movement. One tunnel glowed brighter, a faint imprint of human passage lingering like a footprint in the ether.

"This way," he said, pointing left.
