Chapter 108: In her room
Velenda’s smile faded, her brows knitting as she stepped closer. "That’s so unfair," she said, her voice sharp with frustration. "You had nothing to do with it. They’re just scared and picking an easy target. It’s wrong, Alex."
She rested a hand on his arm, her touch light but firm. "You’re not alone, okay? I know you’re not what they think."
Alex nodded, her words noted but not something he leaned into. "Yeah, thanks," he said, his tone even. "Let’s get out of here. Your place sounds better than this."
Velenda’s grin returned, and she hooked her arm through his. "You’ll love it," she said, pulling him along. "Come on, the market’s overrated."
He followed, the crowd’s stares fading as they left the bustle behind.
The walk to Velenda’s house took them through Starhaven’s residential district, where elven homes loomed large, all ornate spires and arches carved with glowing runes.
Alex was used to the over-the-top architecture by now, but Velenda’s place still stood out, a massive structure of pale stone, its towers draped in vines that seemed to shimmer, its windows spilling warm light.
They stepped into a grand foyer, high ceilings and mosaic floors catching the eye. What Alex didn’t expect was the short elf leaning against a shelf, flipping through a magazine. He was pudgy, with a round belly and curly black hair framing a friendly face.
Velenda let out a happy squeak, throwing her arms around him and planting a quick peck on his cheek. "Dad!" she said, her voice full of affection.
