Chapter 427: The Desire To Hunt
"The spirit mark was here," Zion said from the comfort of his passenger’s seat.
Jocelyn nodded and kept her eyes in front and her hand on the steering wheel.
Behind them, Ben sat down inside the back space with his legs crossed on the metal surface.
"Hey, did you notice that the designs of these buildings have changed in this area, they’re different from the buildings in that main city," Ben said.
His big eyes reflected the light from the different houses they were passing by.
"There must be some kind of separation. It could be functional," Zion said.
"Not really, how are transparent houses supposed to be functional?" Ben asked. The place they were passing through happened to have a lot of these similar houses with glass for outer walls.
Zion’s spirit energy seeped into the minds of the residents here and read their surface thoughts, "I think this is a place of the elites of their society.
Not really the top of the hierarchy but these guys would be considered wealthy.
Oh wait, a few of them are not wealthy and seem to be living paycheck to paycheck, whatever that means..."
"So some of them are pretending to be high up on this social hierarchy of theirs when in fact, they’re not?" Jocelyn asked, and she also noticed a gate ahead.
Zion nodded his head, "Yeah, it seems like it. I’m guessing they’re doing it for the status and the thrill they get whenever others suck up to them,"
Ben laughed, "That’s foolish. How can one pretend to be at the top for so long?
Imagine if you could pretend to be a tier 4 wolf, how amazing it would be,"
Jocelyn smiled, "Well, some things work well when strength isn’t the primary factor determining societal status..."
The truck they were driving pulled up to the closed gate.
Some security guards in their security post came out, flashing their torch lights at the truck.
"You can’t be here ma’am," was the first thing one of the security guards said with a warning tone.
"Oh, sorry, we were just looking for something," Jocelyn said, giving the security guard a sweet smile.
The security guard was slightly stunned. Jocelyn was probably considered average in the arkship but among these humans, she possessed a whole set of traits that made her attractive.
Blue hair, bright blue eyes, a symmetrical face, and a hint of craziness flashing in her eyes.
Just looking at her, the security guard was reminded of those crazy times he had during his youth. Jocelyn reminded him of those crazy nights he had with those crazy girls.
The security guard maintained his composure and remembered his job, "What are you looking for?" He asked, sounding calmer and less threatening.
"Uhm..." Jocelyn didn’t know how to answer.
"Take a look at this big guy, are you guys going to the circus?" Another security guard said with a look of astonishment on his face.
He was searching the back of the truck when he saw Ben sitting there with his legs crossed.
Ben was big, and it was very clear even as he sat down. Just looking at those bulging muscles that threatened to burst out of his black sleeves, the security guard felt intimidated.
"You’re all wearing black..." Another guard noticed and muttered to himself, audible for all to hear.
He flashed his light on Zion’s face through the window.
"And you also carry around a blind person," He said, noticing Zion’s grey eyes through the cracks of his white locks.
"I’m not blind, I’m perfectly fine," Zion said, wanting to clear the misunderstanding.
He had already read their surface thoughts. He knew that these guards were security personnel out here to protect a group of people.
Each of them was wearing a body cam that was transmitting all that was happening live to another computer somewhere else. Not only that, they had to make a report after every thirty minutes to the other guards listed in different places.
There were a lot of things the wealthy had paid for to make sure that their security team could not be compromised, at least, not without anyone noticing that something went wrong.
Zion also knew that if he forcefully took control of the minds of these security guards, it would cause a scene, not now but in the future.
That could escalate into their origins and presence being detected. Talk less of blending in with the civilization, they might lose the Primordial Wolf.
"Uhm, we’re waiting for someone," Zion said. He just caught on to one of the security guard’s surface thoughts.
They were waiting for someone named Joseph Wemberly to come out for the estate. And apparently, they had been waiting for him out here for some time.
"Who are you waiting for?" The security guard asked as he casually looked again at the tires.
"Joseph, Joseph Wemberly," Zion said.
The security guard raised his eyebrows, "Oh, you’re with him? Call him then," He said.
"Oh, we’ve been trying to but he’s not picking up," Zion said.
The security guard narrowed his eyes, pausing for a slight moment. Too many suspicious things have been happening lately.
"I’ll call Mr Hastleton, keep an eye on them," The security guard said to his colleagues before walking away to his guard post.
However, as he walked away. Ben, who had been quietly enjoying the admiration he was getting from these lesser beings, suddenly had a change of expression.
His eyes widened like saucers and his shoulders trembled.
He felt it, the presence of a hunter.
His body wasn’t trembling due to fright, but out of excitement.
"He’s here," Ben said as he began to get up from his sitting position.
Jocelyn and Zion, still inside the car, had their bodies tense as if they were about to explode.
Veins popped up on their foreheads. Jocelyn’s grip on the steering wheel tightened. She applied so much force that the rims were crushed after.
Hearing the sound of metal and plastic being jammed together, one of the security guards who was nearby rushed over.
"What’s happening...how are you doing that?" The security guard asked, already reaching for the rubber bullet gun by his side.
Jocelyn didn’t answer, she was focused on this strange feeling within her.
Not just her, Ben and Zion were also feeling the same thing. It was a strong desire, a very strong desire to hunt.
As if by default, they knew what they wanted to hunt.
"Whoa, easy there big guy," The last security guard backed up with his hand on his rubber bullet gun.
Ben ignored him, his expression had gone very serious.
With a single step, he dropped down from the truck, causing the vehicle to echo out a metallic groan.
The ground trembled slightly due to Ben’s weight. The security guards felt that little vibrations from where they stood and couldn’t believe it.
’Could it be one of those freaks? I thought they were hiding,’ One of the security guards thought. Zion picked up on this.
But even Zion was too preoccupied with how he was feeling to pay much attention to the thoughts of these security guards.
"We’ve barely been here for a day and we’re about to get some action. The others will be jealous," Ben said, a maddening smile appearing on his face.
He swung his big arms back and forth, flexing his muscles and neck like an athlete preparing for a sprint.
"Hello, Mr Hastleton?" The security guard who had gone to call Mr Hastleton to hear the sound of a shirt scream before the line was cut.
A short scream, that of a woman. It sounded as if she was about to say something before she was interrupted.
Now, with these sketchy people outside and the strangeness of that phone call, the security guard was sure that something was going on.
He immediately contacted another security guard who was patrolling that area. "Hey, can you check out Mr Hastleton’s house. I think something’s up,"
/////
On the other side, the security guard who had just been contacted tapped the earpiece in his ear, "Sure."
The security guard, wearing his white and black uniform, walked over to Mr Hastleton’s gate.
From outside, he could see that the curtains of the house were down and the lights were all turned off.
The house had its own gatekeeper so the security guard went to that post first.
Unfortunately, no one was there, which was weird. If there was no one there, he would find it hard to check up on Mr Hastleton.
Usually, just confirming from the gatekeeper was more than enough but even he was missing.
A gatekeeper should never be missing, never.
Especially not at this time.
The security guard flashed his flashlight through the Iron bars of the gate, hoping to see anything inside.
*VROOM!*
Mr Hastleton’s black car roared to life and its headlights shone brightly on the gate, momentarily blinding the security guard.
The gate began to slide into the side of the high fence automatically, probably controlled by a remote inside the car.
"Oh, it’s just Mr Hastleton," The security guard muttered as he stepped away from the gateway.
If Mr Hastleton was going out, it made sense that the gatekeeper was not at his post.
Or did it?
The black car drove out of the motor court and the security guard was able to catch a glimpse of the person in the driver’s seat.
The greeting he was about to deliver was stuck in his throat.
The person he saw at the driver’s seat wasn’t Mr Hastleton, but a young grey-haired lad with blood all over his nose and mouth.
