Chapter 62: A Serum’s Secrets, a Captain’s Shadow

Dr. Abraham Erskine's Super-Soldier Serum was a puzzle of exquisite, frustrating complexity. Dr. Finch and his Montreal-based scientific team, even with their advanced equipment and Finch's System-enhanced analytical mind, struggled to fully replicate its delicate balance. They could isolate components, understand certain catalytic reactions, but the precise sequencing, the almost alchemical synergy that Erskine had achieved, remained elusive.

"It's more than just chemistry, Mr. Thorne," Finch reported, his usual intellectual excitement tinged with a rare note of bafflement during one of their secure holographic conferences. "There's a... bio-energetic resonance, a unique 'vita-radiation' component Erskine harnessed that we can only theorize about. Our attempts to replicate it purely through chemical synthesis result in... instability. Increased aggression, yes. Enhanced strength, certainly. But also cellular degradation, unpredictable mutations. Nothing approaching the balanced perfection achieved with Steve Rogers."

The System provided a similar, blunter assessment: [Super-Soldier Serum (Erskine Formula) Replication Difficulty: EXTREME. Missing Key Catalyst: Vita-Radiation Emitter (Erskine Design – Unique Prototype Likely Destroyed at Camp Lehigh). Without Emitter or Equivalent Energy Source, serum yields are Unstable and Inferior. Probability of Creating Stable Prime Conduit (Captain America Class) via current methods: <1%.]

This was a setback, but not an insurmountable one for Elias. If he couldn't immediately replicate Erskine's exact success, perhaps he could adapt it. The "unstable but potent" results Finch described – increased aggression, enhanced strength, even with the risk of degradation – sounded suspiciously like a crude, less refined version of his own Feral Striker template, or perhaps, the early, failed Hydra "Subjekt Gamma" experiments.

Elias instructed Finch to shift focus: not just replication, but adaptation. Could they use Erskine's serum as a booster for existing empowerments? Could it stabilize or enhance his Feral Strikers? Or, more daringly, could a modified, less stable version be used to create expendable, high-aggression shock troops for specific, suicidal missions where longevity was not a concern? The moral implications were, as always, a distant consideration compared to strategic necessity. This path also offered a potential route to more Prime Essence Shards if these unstable "boosted" individuals were eventually... decommissioned or fell in battle against suitably exotic foes.

While his scientists wrestled with Erskine's legacy, Elias closely monitored the rise of Captain America. Anya Petrova's intelligence from Washington was invaluable. Steve Rogers, initially a propaganda tool, was proving to be an exceptional field operative. Under the guidance of Peggy Carter and a gruff but effective OSS handler named Colonel Chester Phillips, Captain America was undertaking increasingly dangerous missions behind enemy lines in Europe. He wasn't just strong and fast; he was an inspiring leader, a brilliant tactician, and possessed an almost uncanny ability to survive impossible odds. His shield, a unique vibranium-alloy prototype, was becoming as iconic as the man himself.

"He is the genuine article, Mr. Thorne," Anya reported. "The serum truly amplified his innate goodness. He is incorruptible, driven by a fierce sense of justice. This makes him predictable in some ways, but also incredibly resilient against psychological manipulation. Hydra remnants in Europe are already reporting him as a major, almost supernatural, threat."
