Chapter 61: Of Serum and Shadows, an Uneasy Crown
The vial of Super-Soldier Serum, secured from the chaos of Camp Lehigh, became the new focal point of Elias Thorne's scientific ambitions. It was a tangible key, a potential shortcut to creating Prime Conduit-level assets loyal only to him, bypassing the unpredictable nature of System empowerments like the Feral Striker template which, while potent, were not at the same echelon as a true Super-Soldier. Dr. Abraham Erskine's genius, tragically silenced, now rested in Elias's hands.
Dr. Finch, with his team of carefully vetted, morally ambivalent scientists in the fortified Montreal research compound, began the painstaking process of analyzing the vibrant blue liquid. The facility, already equipped with advanced (often anachronistically so, thanks to Elias's subtle technological nudges and "acquired" Hydra schematics) biochemical and genetic analysis tools, buzzed with quiet, intense activity. Finch himself, his Cognitive Archer abilities allowing him to see patterns and correlations in the serum's complex molecular structure that baffled his colleagues, was consumed by the challenge.
"It's... elegant, Mr. Thorne," Finch reported during a secure holographic communication (another of Elias's custom-designed marvels, ensuring untraceable, face-to-face strategic discussions across continents). "Erskine didn't just aim for brute strength. This formula targets latent genetic markers, optimizes cellular regeneration, enhances neural processing speed, and, most remarkably, seems to amplify existing personality traits. Hence his obsession with finding a 'good man' – the serum makes you more of what you already are."
This was both a promise and a dire warning. In the right subject, it created a Captain America. In the wrong one... it could unleash a monster.
Elias also tasked Finch with the interrogation of Heinz Kruger. The Hydra agent, broken and terrified after his U-boat rendezvous became a watery grave for his comrades (an event he'd only partially witnessed but whose catastrophic implications were clear), was a fount of information on Hydra's lower-level operational security, their indoctrination methods, and their desperate attempts to replicate or acquire advanced technologies after Adlerhorst's fall. He confirmed that rumors of Schmidt's "ascension" were actively being propagated within Hydra to maintain morale, but even Kruger seemed unsure if it was truth or desperate dogma. Kruger also inadvertently revealed the existence of several other minor Hydra research outposts across Europe, focused on everything from advanced rocketry to psychological warfare – more potential targets for Logan.
The [Prime Essence Shard] count, however, remained frustratingly low for Elias ([2.8/5.0]). The U-boat crew had yielded little. He needed higher-quality "enhanced" targets if he was to fuel the System's more advanced template creations or potential upgrades for his existing Feral Strikers.
While Finch dissected the serum, Elias's other assets were active. Anya Petrova in Washington D.C. became his shadow Cicerone through the halls of American power. Her primary mission: to subtly monitor the nascent career of Captain America. Steve Rogers, grieving for Erskine but galvanized by his newfound abilities, had been fast-tracked by the OSS. Initially relegated to USO tours and selling war bonds (a propaganda decision that irked Rogers immensely), he was already chafing for real combat, for a chance to take the fight to the Nazis.
Anya observed his training, his public appearances, his interactions with figures like Peggy Carter (whose professional respect for Rogers was clearly evolving into something deeper, a detail Anya noted with her usual dispassionate precision). She also identified key personnel around Rogers – his commanding officers, his support staff – potential leverage points or individuals to watch.
