Chapter 28: What If?
The car has been in heavy silence since then. Lunara tried to tell her, but nothing came out and Naomi chose to seal her lips.
As they neared the house, Lunara finally spoke. "Naomi," she turned slightly to look at Naomi, who was driving with an unreadable expression, "I know you’re mad, but I only just found out about this myself. I didn’t know that the man I married was your brother."
"Ara..." Naomi glanced at her briefly before shifting her eyes back to the road. "I’m not mad at you for that. I’m upset because you didn’t turn to me when things got hard. If anything, I should blame myself. You’ve been suffering since you married him, and all I could do was offer you words of encouragement because you never let me help." She sighed, recalling every time she had tried to offer Lunara financial support.
"No, it’s not your fault. Maybe it’s true... maybe this is just my fate." She snickered, but her words sounded hollow in Naomi’s ears.
"Bullshit," Naomi snapped. "You make your own future, Ara. Sometimes things don’t go as planned, but that doesn’t mean you were doomed from the start. This... this isn’t fate."
Lunara lowered her gaze, her fingers gripping the fabric of her clothes. "Then what is it?" she murmured.
Naomi sighed, shaking her head. "It’s a mess. A mess that you got dragged into, and a mess you can still get out of."
Lunara let out a shaky breath. "It’s not that easy, Naomi..."
"I never said it was easy," Naomi replied firmly. "But you’re not alone in this. So stop acting like you have to carry everything by yourself."
Lunara looked at her, searching for something in her expression. For the first time in a while, she felt the smallest flicker of hope.
"And ask for a divorce. I’ll make sure you get your alimony. What a jerk of a husband you have." Naomi rolled her eyes as they finally pulled into the driveway. "I’ll support you a hundred percent if you divorce him, even though he’s my brother."
