Chapter 206: His Only Family
Evelyn sat in the car, cold and blank, as Elias stepped out. Her hand that had held onto Elias was in mid-air, trembling just like her heart, which had just taken a major blow. Her mind was a whirlwind of emotions, thoughts racing faster than she could process. She felt a crushing weight of helplessness and betrayal, but also a deep void formed in her heart.
Elias walked toward the other side, every step feeling heavy and painful. This would probably be the last time he would ever see her, which hurt even more. At least, he should have spoken a little more and expressed his gratitude more sincerely so she would hate him less. At least, he should have hugged her one last time. The thought of leaving her behind, of never seeing her again, was almost unbearable.
"What are you doing?" Zevian grumbled at his stupid brother-in-law. When Elias didn’t listen and continued walking toward them, he shouted, "Get back into the car, Elias!"
Elias crossed the distance in a few strides. Taking out his hand, he offered one last handshake. "Take care of her. Make sure she is not hurt by anyone again."
Zevian looked at his hand and then back at Elias. Even Damien was confused as to why Elias was not letting them at least fight for his freedom. Being with Maverick was as good as being in a well; he could already see Elias’s future, but the little man still chose it?
When Zevian didn’t respond, Elias retracted his hand and sighed. He closed his eyes, forcing himself not to turn away to have one final glance at his sister. Heaving another sigh, he murmured, "Goodbye," before walking to his biological father’s side.
Maverick on the other end smiled in victory. He walked a few steps forward, his arms wide open for his little boy. How long had he yearned for this moment? He had waited for 18 years to meet him, to declare to the world that he was his blood, his son!
"Elias, my boy." Maverick smiled warmly, pulling Elias in a tight hug. "I knew you would choose me," he grinned proudly, breaking the hug.
Wrapping a hand around his shoulder, Maverick continued, his joy barely contained. "Don’t worry, now daddy is earning more. I will provide you a better life than your mother and that useless Brown had offered you," he continued, making futile promises. But he failed to notice the sadness on his son’s face.
"Let’s get out of here quickly," Elias muttered, shrugging away from his grip. He was disgusted to have ever been born to such parents, the fact that he might have to live the rest of his life with this man made him nauseous. But it was his fate and no one could alter it.
Evelyn stared out of the car, her vision blurring with unshed tears. Elias kept moving further away from her, to the point that she couldn’t see him after some distance. She felt Zevian turn and look at her, wondering if she was going to just sit there and be sad.
