My System Love Me Too Much

Chapter 162 - 162: Thanatos Hunt Nikolai

A/N : Hai hai reader, so in the future, this novel may not be updated regularly as usual, but will only be updated from Sunday to Tuesday.

This is also because webnovel has punished me by making this book sink in the sea of rankings.

Well, this certainly makes me very disappointed, but I can't do anything about it. In the future, I will probably focus on writing another novel first and will post it in mid-February, so that's all for now, and I might change my mind in the future.

....

As they were about to leave the campus grounds, everything happened in an instant.

Bang!

A body was suddenly thrown through the air and slammed violently into a wall along the road they were heading toward, bones snapping on impact.

"Ahhh—!"

"Kyahh!"

The civilians they were escorting screamed in terror.

"Don't scream. Stay low," Allen ordered sharply.

Before anyone could react further—

Bang…! Bang…! Bang…!

Gunfire echoed from another section of the university, not far from their position. The sound was heavy, automatic—far from the scattered shots of a panicked survivor.

Leon immediately raised his pistol, instinctively turning toward the direction of the gunfire. "That sounded close—"

Allen grabbed his arm, stopping him before he could move. "Leon, don't," he said firmly. "Our priority is getting the civilians out. Whatever's happening over there isn't our mission right now."

The three civilians—two male students and one female—nodded quickly, fear written all over their faces. They didn't need convincing. Whatever had just thrown that body across the street was not something they wanted to see.

Leon hesitated for a moment, jaw clenched, then lowered his weapon. "…Alright. You're right."

"Oke, let's move. Now," Leon said.

They broke into a run toward the patrol car. Drawn by the noise, several zombies began pouring out from between buildings, groaning as they staggered toward them.

Bang! Bang!

Allen and Leon fired while moving, dropping the closest threats without slowing down. The echoes of gunfire mixed with distant screams and the ever-present sirens in the city.

They reached the vehicle just in time, shoved the civilians inside, and piled in themselves. The engine roared to life, tires screeching as Leon hit the gas.

The campus disappeared behind them as they sped away—leaving unanswered gunfire, shattered bodies, and whatever nightmare was unfolding there far behind.

For now, at least.

Meanwhile, Sienna was positioned not far from the route Allen had just taken. She had clearly seen Allen and Leon earlier, escorting a small group of civilians who had been caught in the aftermath of the fighting. For a brief moment, she had considered calling out to him—but this wasn't the time. She was still on assignment, recording combat data on Tyrant Thanatos, Dr. Muller's creation, which was currently tearing through Umbrella forces nearby.

Before she could refocus, the radio clipped to her vest crackled to life.

"Sienna, I heard gunfire from your direction. What's going on over there?"

Jettingham's voice came through, sharp and alert—the captain of Echo Six.

Sienna glanced toward the darkened campus buildings before replying calmly.

"Two police officers passed through the area. Looks like they were rescuing a few civilians—college students who got trapped during the fighting."

There was a brief pause.

Then another voice cut in, colder, impatient.

"Why wasn't this reported immediately?" Dr. Muller snapped over the channel.

"You should have stopped them. They could have been useful test subjects—valuable combat data against Thanatos."

The channel went silent for half a second.

Sienna's jaw tightened. Around her, several members of Echo Six exchanged uneasy looks. No one liked the direction this conversation was heading.

Before Sienna could respond, Jettingham grabbed the secondary channel Muller was using and cut him off.

"Professor, that's enough," Jettingham said firmly.

"Using civilians as live test subjects is out of the question. The Federation would shut this operation down immediately if they even suspected something like that. Our priority is Umbrella And take you out of this place—nothing else."

There was tension in the air, thick enough to feel.

Jettingham continued, his tone leaving no room for argument.

"Echo Six, return to your original objectives. Ignore the professor's last statement."

The order was clear.

On the other end of the radio, Muller said nothing for a moment. When he finally spoke, his voice was tight, restrained—but unmistakably resentful.

He didn't like being overruled.

Still, for now, he had no choice but to back down. He needed a clean extraction from the area, and picking a fight with the Federation—or the soldiers protecting his operation—wasn't in his best interest. Not yet.

But inside his mind, something had shifted.

After successfully creating Thanatos, Muller had begun to see himself as untouchable—above restraint, above consequence. Anyone who opposed him was no longer an ally, only an obstacle waiting to be corrected.

And sooner or later, he intended to remind them all who held the real power.

...

Meanwhile, Nikolai was finally being pushed into a corner.

Most of the Umbrella operatives sent into the area were already dead—torn apart one by one after facing Thanatos head-on. The radio chatter had gone silent long ago. Now, only distant echoes of gunfire and collapsing structures filled the night air. Nikolai was breathing hard, sweat soaking through his gear as he moved through the ruined campus, exhaustion catching up to him after hours of running and hiding.

But no matter where he went, Thanatos kept coming.

The Tyrant stalked him relentlessly, its heavy footsteps shaking the ground, its presence impossible to escape. Walls, doors, barricades—none of them slowed it down for more than a few seconds. Nikolai could feel it, like a predator that never lost the scent of its prey.

"Damn it…" Nikolai muttered as he ducked behind a partially collapsed building.

With shaking hands, he began setting up explosives—improvised charges wired to a crude detonator. It was a desperate move, but he had no other choice. He placed the explosives near a support column, right where the Tyrant would have to pass if it followed him.

Moments later, the unmistakable sound reached his ears.

THUD… THUD… THUD…

Thanatos emerged from the shadows, its massive frame illuminated by flickering emergency lights. Its exposed heart pulsed violently, muscles twitching as it advanced without hesitation.

Nikolai grinned nervously. "Come on… come on…"

When the Tyrant stepped into range, Nikolai slammed the detonator.

BOOOOM!!

A thunderous explosion ripped through the area. Fire and debris erupted outward, shattering windows and tearing apart part of the building. Concrete collapsed, steel beams twisted, and the shockwave threw Nikolai off his feet.

For a moment… there was silence.

Nikolai lay on the ground, coughing, his ears ringing. He forced himself to look up, a shaky smile forming on his face.

"…Got you," he whispered.

But then—movement.

From within the smoke and rubble, something stood back up.

Thanatos emerged from the debris, its body scorched and damaged—but already regenerating. Flesh knit itself together at an unnatural speed, muscles swelling larger than before. Its exposed heart beat faster, stronger, as if the explosion had only fueled its rage.

The Tyrant let out a deep, distorted roar.

Nikolai's blood ran cold.

"…Shit… shit—fuck!" he yelled, scrambling backward. "Why won't that thing die?!"

There was no time to think anymore.

Thanatos lunged forward, smashing through the remaining debris like it wasn't even there.

Nikolai turned and ran again, panic fully setting in now. No plans, no backup, no allies left—just survival. His boots pounded against the pavement as he fled into the darkness, knowing one horrifying truth:

The monster was hunting him.

He kept running, breath ragged, boots slamming against cracked pavement as he desperately tried to contact the handlers who had put him on this suicide mission in the first place. Gunfire echoed somewhere behind him, followed by the distant, bone-shaking roar of Thanatos as it tore through whatever still stood in its way.

"Nikolai to Central, respond! I need backup—now!" he barked into the radio while vaulting over debris.

For a few tense seconds, there was only static.

Then the radio crackled to life.

"Proceed to the northern sector, near the waste disposal area," a cold, emotionless voice ordered. "Lure the Tyrant to that location. You will receive assistance there."

Nikolai skidded to a stop for half a second, eyes wide. "What? Are you insane? That area's a death trap—!" he snapped back into the radio.

Only static answered him.

"Hello? Central? Damn it!" he shouted, slamming the side of the radio in frustration. No response. The line was dead.

He clenched his teeth, sweat dripping down his face as another heavy impact echoed behind him—Thanatos was still coming. Closer now. Always closer.

"Tch… bastards," Nikolai muttered under his breath. "Using me as bait…"

With no other options left, he turned and sprinted toward the north, toward the waste disposal zone. Sirens wailed faintly in the distance, mixing with the groans of the undead and the thunderous footsteps of the Tyrant hunting him like prey.

Whatever "help" Central had promised, Nikolai knew one thing for certain—

if he slowed down even for a second, Thanatos would tear him apart long before he ever reached it.

...

Meanwhile, members of Echo Six spotted the direction Nikolai was fleeing and immediately reported it to their captain.

"Well… looks like that guy is trying to run," the captain said calmly over the comms. "If that's the case, let him go."

However, the route Nikolai was heading toward was far from safe. Heavy fighting was already breaking out in that sector. Military units had been deployed there, attempting to secure the northern zone and contain the outbreak. Realizing the implications, the Echo Six operative forwarded the recorded footage to their superior—Morgan—through a secure channel.

At the same time, the situation escalated.

Umbrella helicopters began sweeping across the northern sky, their rotors cutting through the smoke-filled air. One of the choppers slowed, then released a large sealed payload, which crashed violently into the designated zone below. The container split open on impact.

Inside was a T-103 Tyrant prototype.

The creature emerged slowly from the wreckage, towering and silent, its massive frame wrapped in a long black coat. Umbrella had deployed it with a clear objective—to erase everything in the area. Military forces, civilians, anyone who could become a witness to their bioweapons program. This was a cleanup operation.

Military units on the ground immediately noticed the sudden Umbrella movement and the abnormal deployment. Reports flooded in.

"Command, we've got Umbrella assets moving north. Confirmed hostile bioweapon deployment. This isn't a drill."

Elsewhere, Morgan reviewed the footage sent by Echo Six. The image of Thanatos, Dr. Muller's creation, tearing through Umbrella forces played repeatedly on his screen. A slow, satisfied smile formed on his face.

"So it really works…" he muttered.

Moments later, Morgan issued new orders through the secure channel.

"Echo Six, new directive. Redirect Thanatos to the northern zone. Have it engage immediately and support the military units on site. Priority one is containment and damage control."

There was a brief pause before he added, his tone sharpening,

"Secondary objective: extract Dr. Muller alive. Evacuate him from the combat zone as soon as possible."

The battlefield to the north was about to turn into something far worse.

Umbrella's Tyrant. Muller's Thanatos. Military forces caught in between.

And somewhere in the chaos, Nikolai was running straight toward it all—unaware that he was about to enter a kill zone far deadlier than anything he had faced before.

"Roger." Jettingham replied after receiving the order. His expression hardened as he lowered the radio and turned to the rest of Echo Six.

"Alright, listen up," he said firmly. "New orders just came in. We're moving north—now. That area is designated as the new extraction zone. Command wants Thanatos redirected there to support the military operation, and our priority is to secure Dr. Muller and get him out alive."

The team exchanged quick looks, the tension obvious but familiar. This wasn't their first hot extraction—but the mention of multiple Tyrants in one zone made even seasoned operators uneasy.

"Understood, Captain," one of the operators answered over the comms.

"Copy that."

"Echo Six moving."

Weapons were checked, magazines secured, and helmet cams flickered back online as red status lights turned green. The team began moving swiftly through the ruined campus, boots crunching over shattered glass and spent shell casings. In the distance, the dull thump of explosions echoed from the northern sector, followed by the unmistakable roar of heavy rotors cutting through the night air.

Umbrella helicopters.

Sienna glanced toward the smoke rising on the horizon. "Looks like Umbrella's escalating. That means the situation up north is about to get a whole lot worse."

Jettingham didn't deny it. "Which is exactly why we need to be fast and clean. Stick to formation, watch your angles, and don't engage unless necessary. If you see Nikolai—ignore him. He's not our mission."

The team moved out, disappearing into the shadows of Raccoon City's collapsing infrastructure. Sirens wailed somewhere far off, gunfire crackled intermittently, and above it all, the night sky churned with helicopters carrying death in sealed steel crates.

Up north, forces were converging—

Umbrella, the military, Thanatos, and now Echo Six.

Raccoon City was running out of time.
