Chapter 57: It’s Dangerous Here

My eyes widened as those words washed over me and I shook my head.
"I- I didn’t know." I whispered, heart starting to race bert hard for a completely different reason this time. I mean, my life had technically been in danger since the moment I was brought here against my own will. But the way he said it just now, I just knew whatever he meant was on a completely different level.
"For whatever reason, my father wants you dead." He announced and my eyes widened even more, heart lurching tight into my throat as I gaped at him,
I had just been feeling safe for the time being after the grand king said he wouldn’t be killing me anymore but would be using me. Now that I was thinking about it, it hit me that i’d have to be reporting to him everyday and mustn’t leave a single detail out. How was that even gonna work? Would i really have to report to him? The thought left me feeling queasy, and it felt like if I’m betraying the prince if I do something like that. But when my life if on the line, then do I even have a choice?
And now I’m just finding out the reigning king wants me dead. I didn’t even know he was aware of my existence.
It was like the prince could feel my nerves growing before his hand across my waist flattened over my back, which he began to use in massaging my back in an almost soothing way.
"I got intel from my men. He’s planning to bring you in for questioning, but I’ll give you something that bores my crest. Once you show it to the guards whenever they try to grab you, they’d leave you alone at once."
I stared up at him, feeling warm again on the inside, and also so floored that he was offering to do this for me without me even having to ask, not like I’d even dare because it wasn’t like I was deserving of his protection... and why was he protecting me?
"Don’t be scared, okay?" His voice was soft as he spoke, and as I stared at him, I felt some of my nerves reduce at the same moment. He kept moving his palm over my back and the touch soothed me even more.
