Pregnant During An Apocalypse [BL]

Chapter 340 - Their base now

Qiu Yue got down from the car only to see the ruckus happening in front of him.

Muchen was still chasing after Yunfeng despite his pregnant belly, while Yunfeng was doing his best to stay out of reach.

The sight made him stop in his tracks.

"Pregnant woman... no, pregnant person should not be running around like that!" he called out, his voice carrying across the street.

Only then did Muchen finally stop chasing after his lover, his chest rising and falling rapidly as he tried to catch his breath. His face was still flushed with anger, and even after stopping, he continued glaring daggers at Yunfeng, who had wisely put some distance between them.

Qiu Yue sighed as he adjusted his glasses.

To be young and in love... He really did not understand the concept.

If this was what being in love looked like, he was perfectly content staying out of it.

Shaking his head, he walked toward the piles of zombie corpses scattered across the road.

From what he had heard from Zei, these zombies had not simply gathered together on their own.

They seemed to have been controlled by one particular zombie, and that was far more interesting to him than whatever nonsense the young couple was arguing about.

His eyes soon fell on the young girl in the pink dress lying in the middle of the dead zombies.

Qiu Yue’s expression immediately became serious.

He quickly walked over and crouched beside her body, carefully examining her from head to toe. Her face still looked strangely alive despite the bloodless pallor of her skin. There was a huge stab wound underneath her chin, the blade having gone straight through and deep into her brain.

It was obvious that Yunfeng had killed her by striking directly through the vulnerable point.

Qiu Yue’s eyes gleamed behind his glasses.

He quickly pulled out his forceps and carefully collected a small sample from her brain, placing it into a container before examining it under the light. But after only a few seconds, he shook his head.

That was not enough.

A zombie capable of nullifying supernatural powers was completely unprecedented.

He needed more than a small sample.

He needed to examine her entire body, her organs, her nervous system, her brain, and every other part of her that might explain where such an ability had come from.

His entire body seemed to vibrate with excitement at the thought.

Qiu Yue grabbed the girl’s body and lifted her into his arms as though she weighed nothing.

"Does your base have a hospital or some kind of medical facility?" he asked the nearby old man.

Kailun, who had been watching everything from a short distance away, raised a brow. "Yeah. It’s in the center of the base. Why do you—"

Before he could finish, Qiu Yue had already turned around and started walking away with the zombie girl in his arms.

Kailun stared after him. "I really don’t understand youngsters these days."

With another sigh, he turned around and walked toward his son.

Shinju stood in the middle of the road with a desolate look on his face. His eyes moved over every zombie corpse lying around them. Some of them had been his comrades. Others had been his subordinates, people who had been perfectly alive and well when he had left the base.

Now they were nothing more than corpses scattered across the streets they had once protected.

His hands clenched tightly at his sides.

If... if I hadn’t left the base, would this have happened?

His throat tightened as he looked at the familiar uniforms among the bodies.

They... they died because of my recklessness.

A heavy hand suddenly landed on his shoulder.

"Don’t blame yourself for everything."

Kailun gave his son’s shoulder a firm pat, his old eyes carrying a trace of sympathy as he stood beside him.

"Right now, we need to think about how to secure this place and how to make it safe again. Soon... soon we will be able to take in other survivors too. We can’t let what happened here stop us from rebuilding."

Shinju lowered his head, wiping his red eyes roughly with the back of his hand. He took a deep breath before looking around the ruined base once more.

"Yes... yes, but we should have a burial for them."

"We should burn them instead."

Jai’s voice came from behind them.

Both men turned around to see him walking toward them, one hand wiping the dried and fresh blood from beneath his nose. His face was still pale from overusing his power, but he stubbornly remained on his feet.

"Dad, burying them might contaminate the soil," Jai explained, looking toward the piles of bodies. "I’ll bring up all the zombies I buried earlier, and you guys can shoot them down. We’ll burn them outside the base instead."

Shinju looked at his son for a long moment before slowly nodding.

"That is for the best."

His eyes softened as he reached out and pulled Jai into a half hug, his arm settling heavily around his son’s shoulders.

Jai leaned against him for a second, exhausted.

Jai was about to move away when a small cry came from one of the nearby villas.

Everyone turned toward the sound, and Shinju’s expression immediately softened when he saw one of the little children peeking out from behind the doorway.

The child looked frightened, his tiny hands gripping the edge of the door as he watched all the adults outside.

"Don’t be afraid," Shinju called gently. "The zombies are gone."

The child didn’t move.

Yunfeng, who had been standing nearby with Muchen, walked over and crouched down so he wouldn’t appear so intimidating. "You can come out now. We won’t hurt you."

After a moment, the little boy slowly stepped outside.

Behind him, the three women followed cautiously, still looking as though they couldn’t believe they were finally safe.

One of them held the youngest child tightly against her chest.

"We... we can really stay here?" she asked quietly.

Shinju looked around at the ruined streets before nodding.

"Yes. This place belongs to the survivors now. As long as we can secure it, you can stay."

The woman’s eyes immediately filled with tears.

She lowered her head and whispered, "Thank you."
