Yunfeng and the others joined the discussion, and soon everyone was trying to figure out what they should do next.

Shinju frowned deeply as he stared at the familiar base in the distance. His men were still in there. Even if only a few of them had survived, it was still worth going back to rescue them. He had spent months building that place and protecting the people inside it. He couldn’t simply turn his back on them.

But then his eyes fell on the group of younger people standing behind him.

They were already running low on ammunition, and according to Kailun, the zombies inside the compound were behaving strangely. He couldn’t justify sending everyone into a place they knew almost nothing about, especially when the situation was so unpredictable.

After a long moment, Shinju made his decision.

"We should turn back."

His words immediately caught everyone’s attention.

Jai, Yunfeng, and Zei all stared at him as if he had just said something ridiculous.

"But this is our base," Jai pointed out.

"It’s already lost," Shinju replied firmly. "We don’t have a base anymore. We should focus on building another one somewhere else. Somewhere safer."

Muchen stared at him blankly.

"There is no safe place anymore."

Shinju looked at him.

"The infection has spread everywhere." Muchen gestured toward the compound and its heavily fortified walls. "If we manage to clear out the zombies inside, we can fortify this place again and keep ourselves safe."

His hand instinctively moved to his belly.

He didn’t want to bring his child into an unsafe environment. The thought of raising a baby while constantly moving from place to place was hardly reassuring. The base might currently be filled with zombies, but if they could clear it out, it would make an excellent shelter for them. It already had walls, supplies, rooms, and enough space for everyone. Even their future children could grow up there without having to constantly worry about surviving on the road.

"We’re low on ammunition, and I don’t have my men," Shinju immediately rejected the idea. "It’s impossible."

Jai raised an eyebrow.

"Dad..."

He glanced at the others before giving his father a smug smile.

"We actually don’t need any ammunition."

Shinju looked at him skeptically.

Jai pointed toward Yunfeng. "That guy can burn down anything within a ten-mile radius."

Yunfeng’s expression twitched.

Jai then pointed at himself. "I can bury the zombies without any trouble."

Finally, he pointed toward Zei, who happily waved at Shinju.

"And him? He can freeze time."

Zei gave an enthusiastic nod.

Jai spread his arms. "You have all the men you need."

Shinju stared at his son.

He clearly refused to believe that this was a reasonable plan.

"I don’t want to risk you kids. No. This is not a good plan."

Muchen stepped forward.

"Sorry, Uncle, but we’re doing this."

Shinju’s eyes widened slightly.

"We’re taking back this base," Muchen continued calmly, "and I’m having my baby there."

The middle-aged man opened and closed his mouth awkwardly beneath Muchen’s unwavering stare.

"Even if you say so, it’s still too much of a risk. This place—"

"We’ll handle it," Muchen interrupted. "Please just give us some guidance. Tell us where the entry points are and how we can get inside."

"You can’t!" Shinju exclaimed. "This place is filled with mines, and the fucking gate is electrified!"

Muchen didn’t answer.

Instead, he simply rose into the air.

Shinju’s mouth slowly fell open as Muchen floated higher and higher until he was nearly fifty feet above the ground.

Muchen looked down at him with a grin.

"We can fly in."

The middle-aged man simply gaped at him.

"W-Who is this guy?"

Jai immediately nudged his father with his elbow. "Yunfeng’s lover." He paused before adding with a mischievous grin, "Oh, and he’s quite scary when you wrong him, Dad. You better be careful."

Shinju slowly looked up at Muchen, who was still floating casually in the air. For the first time, he began to wonder if perhaps he had been underestimating just how ridiculous this group really was.

Muchen landed in front of Shinju, stumbling slightly as his feet touched the ground. He quickly steadied himself before looking at the older man.

"Okay, now tell us what is up with the mines."

Shinju nodded, still looking somewhat dazed after everything he had witnessed in the past few minutes. "The area in front of the gates is riddled with mines buried underground. Only the gatekeepers know exactly where they’re located. The fence is electrified as well, and its power comes directly from the solar panels we’ve installed throughout the compound. The moment someone touches it, it activates."

He pointed toward the walls surrounding the base.

"So it’s basically a two-way defense system. Even if someone manages to get past the mines without triggering them, they’ll still be caught by the electric fence surrounding the compound."

His expression darkened as he stared at the gates.

"That’s what worries me. How did the infection even spread inside? Nobody was supposed to leave the base, and nobody was supposed to come in either."

"Someone could have snuck out," Muchen suggested. "Or someone could have been infected before entering and hidden it from everyone. There are plenty of explanations." He shrugged. "Whatever happened, it eventually got out of control, and everyone inside became infected."

Shinju’s expression grew heavy. The thought of all his men being dead weighed heavily on him. He had spent years fighting alongside them, and the idea that they might all have been turned into zombies was difficult to accept.

"Is there really no chance of survivors inside?" he asked quietly. "Every house was given rations. They could have hidden inside their homes and survived."

"They could have," Yunfeng said, casting a thoughtful glance toward the walls. "But the only way we’ll know for sure is to go inside and check."

He looked toward Jai and nudged him lightly.

"Take out the land mines. Bury them deep enough that we won’t accidentally trigger them, but keep them somewhere we can retrieve later when we reclaim the base."

"Okie-dokie."

Jai immediately squatted down and placed one hand against the ground.

The earth beneath the gate slowly shifted.

The solid ground transformed into thick, swirling quicksand, spreading across the area where the mines had been buried. One by one, the hidden mines began rising to the surface before sinking into the quicksand and disappearing deep underground.

Jai watched until the last one had vanished.

"There," he announced proudly. "They’re all really deep now. It’s safe to walk over them."
