Chen Xi wore the look of a man about to be sentenced to a lifetime of hard labor. If his older brother didn’t manage to coax his sister-in-law back into good spirits, he could forget about living in peace.
But seeing Gu Zi heavily pregnant, he knew it would be both rude and shameless to linger and freeload. So, after grabbing the food box she’d asked him to take with him, he quietly slipped away like a guest who had long overstayed his welcome.
Inside, Gu Zi placed the dumplings and sweet glutinous rice balls that Sun Yi had sent into the fridge. She instructed Su Shen to boil two pots of water later so they could eat them freshly cooked.
Su Li, observing all this with wide eyes, asked eagerly, "Mommy, are we still making dumplings and buns today?"
They had planned this as a family activity just yesterday — to make dumplings and steamed buns together. Gu Zi had already prepared the fillings and proofed the dough the night before.
Su Li had been looking forward to it all day. The idea of the whole family huddled around the kitchen table, chatting and laughing as they wrapped dumplings and shaped buns, sounded like the perfect kind of chaos.
Catching on to her son’s eager expression, Gu Zi smiled and said warmly, "Of course, we’re making them. We’ll freeze what we don’t eat right away and cook them whenever we want. They’ll be perfect for breakfast over the next few days. Go wash your hands — let’s get started."
The three children dashed off to wash their hands and returned moments later, sleeves rolled up, ready for action. Some got to work on the buns, others on dumplings. The buns needed risen dough, the dumplings used regular dough. Having watched their mother countless times before, the kids didn’t even need instructions.
