Chapter 44: The accident ten years ago
"I investigated it all by myself. If you’re thinking I’m doing this to topple the Shentu family on behalf of the Qiaos, then I have to say you’re wrong. I have evidence and proof after seven years of studying it," Qiao ShenJi said in a hushed whisper, suddenly sounding secretive and dangerous at the same time.
He was challenging Shentu Jing, daring him to look into a past event that could possibly ruin him.
"If you don’t mind, I’d like to view your evidence and proof. I want to know whether your claim is valid," Shentu Jing said. He was up for the challenge. He never backed down from a challenge. The two men shook hands again, sealing an agreement—this time without wrestling with each other’s hands.
"If you didn’t want to be looked down upon, why did you marry your wife?" Shentu Jing asked out of curiosity.
He had no idea that the Qiao family, a high-status, reputable family, would agree to such a thing. It was practically like getting slapped in the face by allowing their daughter to marry someone of low status. He had never heard of this matter before. Probably because the Qiao family wanted to keep it a secret, away from the public eye. It was a disgrace to have a man with no outstanding background marry into the family.
"Because I loved her. And she loved me. So we decided to be together forever and ever, with nothing to pull us apart," Qiao ShenJi answered proudly. The love he described sounded like a fairytale, something Shentu Jing could never attain, no matter how much money he had.
Qiao ShenJi lifted his right hand and proudly showed him his wedding ring.
Still, there were quite a few people in the business circle connected to the Qiao family. They knew about the matrilocal husband matter, and many, including family members, poked fun at Qiao ShenJi. But he just shrugged and smiled it all away as if it were nothing.
The two men secured a deal. They shook hands and agreed to keep each other informed.
