Chapter 116: He is back
"Aaron...?" His name left Serena’s parted lips as she stared at him with a blank look plastered across her face. "You are back early..." she muttered under her breath softly as her mind struggled to comprehend the reality.
I also felt my heart sink to the pit of my stomach in an instant as realisation washed over me. Her husband was now home and he was looking right at me. Panic flashed past my eyes for a split second as my heart pounded loudly against my chest.
Could this be it? He will find out about our revenge plan and ruin everything for us?
The man was looking at me intently from a distance. The next thing I knew, he stood up from the couch and started walking over towards us, closing the distance between us in a few large strides.
"Something cropped up at work and I had to rush back," he turned to explain to her before he snapped his head back around to look at me. Our gazes matched. "Who are you?" He questioned, his voice laced with a hint of doubt and suspicion as he narrowed his eyes at me, his voice jolting me back to reality.
My previous flustered expression was quickly replaced by a calm expression. I took in a deep breath and let my lips curl upwards into a slight smile.
"Oh hi," I greeted. "Sorry to disturb you sir. I am here to visit a friend. I wasn’t sure where to go so I was just asking for directions," I quickly explained, lying right to his face flawlessly.
"Yeah, she came up to me to ask for directions when she happened to see me standing by the door," Serena confirmed.
I was hoping that he would drop the matter. But instead, I found that his dark eyes were carefully examining my features and a hint of recognition flashed past his eyes for a fleeting moment. There was a brief pause as silence enveloped us all and he didn’t say a word for a while.
Seizing this opportunity, I spoke up, breaking the silence.
"Anyway, I got to go, I am running late," I explained. "Thanks for the help," I said with a smile and spun on my heels to leave when his voice pierced through the air and reached my ears.
