Chapter 385: The Same Games
It was just supposed to be a quick walk, a way to take a break and get some fresh air. It wasn’t supposed to turn out like this.
Père had been driving me crazy. He kept to his word and was silent the entire time, but every last one of my nerves was focused on him, waiting for him to strike. The fact that he was just a head without a body and therefore completely incapable of hurting me was besides the point.
I was strung up and strung out, and no amount of banana-flavored lollypops was going to make me any calmer.
"Let’s go for a walk," suggested Tank, his voice soft and soothing. But even that familiar voice made me flinch like I was expecting an attack. Seeing my reaction, all of the guys had an almost visceral reaction.
"Sorry," I sighed, closing my eyes. I loved the head, I really did. And if it were anyone else’s head, I probably wouldn’t be like this, but it wasn’t anyone else’s. "I didn’t mean that."
"No," agreed Chang Xuefeng as he walked over to me. Cupping my cheek in his palm, he gently kissed me on the forehead before turning his attention to the trophy case. "And that is okay. It’s an honest reaction based on your life. If you were able to suppress it, then I would be even more worried. The fact that you are reacting is that you felt safe around us. And we are going to make it safe for you again."
Walking over to where Père’s head was, looking at him with fear on his face, Chang Xuefeng opened the case and touched Père’s forehead. After a minute, he looked at me over his shoulder. "The demon is dead," he announced, stepping back so I could actually see the head.
Its eyes were closed, and I could no longer feel the slime oozing off of it.
"Do you want to keep it or throw it out?" continued my Angel as if he were making polite conversation.
