Be Careful What You Wish For: A Zombie Apocalypse

Chapter 274: The Cure

"Nothing to worry about?" screeched Alicia, her voice reaching a new height that made Réne cringe. "Did you seriously tell me not to worry about something that involved you?"

Letting out a sigh, Réne couldn’t help but smile. Alicia was so dedicated to him that it really did make him feel special. "No, that is not what I am saying," he assured her as he walked over and wrapped his arms around her.

Kissing the top of her head, he couldn’t help the smile on his face as he felt her melting into him. "Since this is important to you, it is important to me. I’ll talk to Bishop and get him to send a few teams out to get supplies and information. You and I both know that the Sins can’t do anything quietly. If there is any movement from them, we’ll hear something."

"I’m just worried," sighed Alicia as she rubbed her face against Réne’s chest. "Everything is just too perfect, and I am scared that that is going to go away, and I won’t be able to stop it."

"You’re right," agreed Réne. "I should have been more considerate about it. I’m sorry that I was so dismissive of your thoughts and feelings on the matter."

"It’s okay," smiled Alicia, looking up at the most important man in Country M. People were flocking from other regions to the New Dawn Sanctuary because of what he provided them. His name was whispered about with pride and reverence, and she was lucky enough to be his wife.

"Any word about the cure?" Réne asked, changing the subject. As soon as the words were out of his mouth, there was a knock on his door. Gently releasing Alicia, he guided her over to the sofa he kept in his office just for her and then opened the door.

"Just the man I wanted to talk to," smiled Réne as he stepped back and let Adam into the room. Eve slipped in after him and waved at Réne before going to sit beside Alicia. The two women were fast friends, and soon enough, they were giggling and laughing about something someone did.

Adam let out a grunt as he stretched his neck from side to side, sighing a bit as his back popped and cracked at the movement. Shrugging off his lab coat, he threw it on the floor. "There are no updates yet," he grumbled as he dropped into the chair in front of Réne’s desk. "I need more... people..."

Réne blinked for a moment before nodding his head. "How many do you need for this batch?"

"Fuck," grumbled Adam, wiping his face with his hand as if just the motion would be enough to dispel the tiredness. "As many as I can get my hands on. This latest adjustment should be perfect. Charles is certain of it, and I’ve gone over his figures. Just think of how the world will react to know that the New Dawn Sanctuary has solved the greatest crisis for humanity since the original sin."

Réne held back the scoff that was threatening to come out as he made a note in his planner to find more test subjects. It didn’t really matter to him how many people were willing or unwilling to submit and be a subject.
