Chapter 262: Sooner Than You Thought
The moment we started walking forward, it was like the rats came out of the woodwork. "Interesting way of handling the Z-Pack," called out one of the men, waving his hand to catch our attention.
He and the rest of the men around him were wearing matching gear with black bulletproof vests, black cargo pants, black shirts, and a helmet. "Why are all the humans always dressed the same?" I asked, my voice low enough that only Luca and Tank could hear me.
The two of them burst out laughing, startling the men approaching us. "Maybe cause out here, everyone had been preparing for the zombie apocalypse a hundred years before it actually came. They probably came in their jeans when it actually happened, and they could go out dressed like badasses," replied Tank, his eyes gleaming with challenge as he stared down the leader.
"Vraiment," purred Désiré. "I could see that. Alicia was de same way when we first met. Den again, I guess she saw it comin’."
"Not quite," called out the man, his hands gripping the butt of his gun a bit tighter. But there was no other sign of aggression coming from him, so maybe this was just a friendly invite? I mean, who doesn’t try to kill a stranger now and again? "We are all from the outpost here before the shit hit the fan. This was our daily uniform."
"Poor you," replied Luca. "At least we were able to change out of our uniforms when the zombies came."
"You served?" asked one of dozens of men who were slowly trying to surround us. "What branch?"
"None," replied Luca. He exchanged a look with Dante before leaving me and walking to where the other man stood. I guess he was our official leader right now.
"He was a police officer," whispered Dante as he took Luca’s place behind me. "They have more in common than a mafia leader."
