Chapter 239: An Order Is An Order
Adam watched dispassionately as the nine men from the Dragon’s Lair ripped through more than 250 men. Those who hadn’t been killed were too cowardly to even face the battle. Their heads were still attached because they chose to run rather than to fight.
That meant that all of his best and brightest soldiers, who he had been training for over a decade, were lying dead or being eaten by whatever was living in the moat.
"We need to retreat," murmured Eve as she stood beside him. "Figure some way to spin this, but I am not willing to die today."
Adam snorted at that statement before he turned his attention to Bishop and Sophia. "I thought you said this was going to be easy?" he asked, his voice dark and dangerous. "Wasn’t that what you said? One girl, four men, and more supplies than we could ever dream?"
Bishop returned Adam’s stare with one of his own. "And? Was I wrong?"
Adam scoffed, his anger mounting as he continued to hear the burst of gunfire and the screams of his men right before they died. It was like the creatures doing the killing were making a game of it. The smiles on their faces certainly suggested as much.
"You were," replied Eve. "They are not human. There is no way they are simply enthralled by a little girl. We met her, and there was no hint of power coming from her."
"They call themselves The Sins," interrupted Réne, his voice devoid of emotion as he watched Luca slice through a soldier’s neck before she could even see him coming. The smile on his face was a familiar one... and one that Réne never thought would be seen in this situation.
"They said you were friends? Brothers?" mused Eve as she turned away from the bloodshed to look at Réne.
