Chapter 423: Step back. Don't get in the way of me showing off!
Although only a little over twenty enemies remained on the battlefield, Wade did not relax in the slightest. If anything, he looked even more cautious than before.
His ancient magic attack was unstoppable. No one there could take it head-on and survive.
Those twenty-odd wizards had not survived because they blocked it, but because they reacted quickly enough to Apparate away the instant the spell reached them.
When Wade unleashed the attack, he had deliberately made it look no different from an ordinary spell in order to catch them off guard.
Most of the wizards who had just been killed had no idea how powerful it was, so they had not even attempted to dodge.
Yet these twenty-odd people had instantly sensed the danger and Apparated away in time. That alone proved they were far from ordinary.
Their combined combat strength might even be far greater than that of the dozens who had fallen before them.
Moreover, Wade keenly noticed that they were only now drawing their wands.
That meant they had stayed at the back and watched the previous battle without attacking.
Wandless Apparition was yet another sign of their strength.
As for why they had not joined the fight earlier and tried to defeat him as quickly as possible, that was another suspicious detail worth noting.
After attacking the Hogwarts Express, they should have aimed to end the battle quickly. It would not be long before Dumbledore, or even Ministry Aurors, arrived.
Within Britain, rapidly Apparating to a designated location was a skill even the weakest Auror could master.
So they had no reason whatsoever to delay.
As Wade observed them, he could feel them observing him in return.
By now, it was almost certain that he was their target.
And yet they still seemed in no hurry to attack.
He had the distinct impression that they had not come to kill him, but to test him.
Yes, it felt like a trial, meant to measure exactly how capable Wade Reynolds was.
But why?
What purpose would testing him serve?
At that moment, Wade heard footsteps approaching from behind.
They were so familiar that he did not need to turn around to know who was coming.
"You shouldn't be here," Wade said.
"Members of the Mutual Aid Society don't stand back and watch while their leader fights the enemy alone," Flitwick's high-pitched voice replied from behind him.
The others immediately voiced their agreement.
Nearly every member of the Mutual Aid Society from the compartment had come.
Hagrid had wanted to join them as well, but he currently had little combat ability, so Tom had told him to use his strength to help the other students instead.
Tom stepped up beside Wade. His lips were pressed tightly together, and his fingers had gone white around his Yew wand.
Faced with the twenty-odd wizards ahead, his natural combat instincts seemed to be screaming at him to turn around and run.
But he knew he could not leave.
There were people behind him too, even if they were just as frightened.
Anne came to stand beside Wade as well, her small face pale with tension.
"I've activated the distress signal. He gave it to me as a precaution against you... I never expected to use it today."
Her meaning was simple.
Grindelwald would be arriving soon.
Across from them, the twenty-odd wizards slowly began walking forwards.
No one could see their expressions through their masks.
But Wade could clearly see hatred in their exposed eyes.
That hatred seemed directed not only at him, but also at the companions behind him.
That was unusual.
He would have to remember it.
The members of the Mutual Aid Society instinctively took a step backwards.
Young people might be fearless through ignorance, but the wizards before them were clearly anything but ordinary. Their mere approach brought an overwhelming sense of pressure.
The young members of the society had simply never experienced anything like this before.
At that moment, Andre and Abraxas came running over, panting heavily. A large group of older students followed closely behind them.
They were also members of the Mutual Aid Society.
Like Tom and the others, they drew sharp breaths at the sight of the fallen giant and the powerful, hostile wizards in the distance.
An indescribable fear quietly rose in their hearts, like soldiers stepping onto a battlefield for the first time.
"I'll hold them off. Andre, take everyone and protect the others. There aren't many people left who can fight," Wade said.
"You're going to face them alone? Let us help!" Andre exclaimed.
"Don't worry. I've already taken care of some of them." Wade lightly pressed the switch on the watch around his wrist. "Besides, this level of battle is beyond you. I don't want to divide my attention protecting all of you."
Tom stepped forwards.
"Wade, I can also..."
"Tom, step back. Don't get in the way of me showing off."
"You bastard..."
Five silver metal plates flew out from Wade's watch one after another and slowly revolved around his body.
Then, holding the Elder Wand, Wade strode forwards.
Only then did everyone notice the piles of ashes scattered across the ground, along with the skeletons left among them.
There was no doubt that the first battle had already ended before they arrived.
And if the aftermath alone was this horrifying, then this truly was not a battle they could interfere in.
Some of the girls could not bear the sight and ran aside to vomit.
No one laughed at them. Under the circumstances, everyone felt much the same.
Watching Wade slowly advance to face the enemy alone, Tom clenched his teeth.
It was happening again.
It was always like this.
He could do nothing. He could not help at all.
With his current strength, he was completely useless. If he rushed forward, he would only become a burden.
"I'm... still too weak. When will I finally be able to..."
Tom felt suffocated by frustration.
"Child, you demand too much of yourself. Being able to do what is within your power is already remarkable."
A kindly voice came from beside him.
Tom turned and saw an elderly witch wearing a gentle smile.
She looked familiar. It was the witch who had sold snacks on the train earlier. No one knew when she had appeared among the crowd.
"Can you help Wade?" Anne asked quickly, hope filling her eyes.
Strictly speaking, aside from the older students, this elderly witch was now the only adult wizard on the entire train who was still standing.
"I'm sorry. I'm not very skilled in combat," the witch said regretfully. "If I tried to help, I would only get in the way. But there are still things within our abilities that we can do."
As she spoke, she drew her wand and conjured an enormous protective barrier in front of everyone.
Tom looked at her suspiciously.
She should not have known Wade, so why did she seem so certain that he could face more than twenty powerful wizards alone?
And could someone capable of casually casting such a powerful defensive spell truly be poor at fighting?
