Chapter 48: Before 6 years ago.
June 23 2026, 1:04am.
"You... BITCH!" A loud shrill voice rang out, echoing through the halls followed by—
Snip snip.
The sounds of skin tearing rippled through the air just as the bleeding open cuts lining the length of Nyx’ara’s back tore open for the tenth time this week. The wounds pulsated, but beyond this pain was a grievance too severe to ignore.
And a betrayal that ran so deep, the earth’s core felt like a big joke.
"I didn’t do it! Mom, dad! You have to believe me! I really didn’t do it!" She screamed at the top of her lungs as she was dragged out of the courtyard into the main house. Her arms and legs were trembling uncontrollably, bleeding as they scraped against the sharp shrubbery. But no matter how much she begged, no one listened.
No one would listen. Not to her anyway.
Blood and tears mixed and streamed down her pale smooth face as she was thrown aggressively to the floor. Her knees hit the ground with a loud thump, causing a sharp pain to lance through her entire body. The force of it made her gasp in anguish; But just as she tried to get up, someone forcefully grabbed at her hair, shoved her back down against the scorching ground, and smacked her face so hard, she instantly saw stars.
"We have always known that you are jealous of Elara, your sister! But killing her?! Is that not too much? You have killed the only child that manages to make me happy?! You’ve killed my daughter? WHY?!" Her mother—stepmother— yelled in her face, the veins at the sides of her neck popping as she glared at Nyx’ara with raw contempt.
The look in her stepmother’s eyes made her shiver but what cut even deeper was the words she said next. She snarled;
"I should have sent you away a long time ago! Goddess, I should have forced your father to throw you into a boarding school where they would kill you, you miserable vermin! How can you bring me so much pain? How are you so evil, Nyx’ara? WHY?!"
For a long moment, Nyx’ara could hardly breathe. It felt as though a large rock had lodged itself somewhere deep inside her throat. Tears burned at the corners of her eyes and fell uncontrollably... and she made no attempt to clean them up.
"Mom, I didn’t do it! I swear on my life, I didn’t!" She cried out again, sounding very desperate this time, but all she earned was another slap. However, this one was so forceful, it made her head whip to the side, and as blood spurted out of her burst lips, streaking across the porcelain floor, her stepmother turned away.
Dejectedly, she looked down to glance at her white school uniform... at the once white material that was now streaked with an unhealthy amount of red. Her chest burned with pain and horror and a desperate need to prove herself. But no one cared.
No one even batted an eyelash.
"You will pay for doing this to Elara! You will pay with your blood for hurting my child!" Her stepmother screamed in her face, and at the sound of her voice, Nyx’ara turned to her father who was standing by the side, glaring at her without saying a word.
She crawled to him desperately, ignoring the sharp pains that action sent up her bleeding knees and arms. She grabbed his sturdy boots with her trembling hands and started to cry in anguish; "Father please!"
He didn’t respond. He didn’t even move at first.
"Father, I beg you! I know nothing! I saw her jump. I tried to save her but she didn’t want my help! I would never hurt Elara and you know it!"
For the first time, her father spoke and his words were cold. Lifeless. Clipped. He drawled; "I don’t know you anymore. I don’t know who this version of a person you’ve become is."
Those words stung. It felt like a thousand sharp blades tearing into her soul all at once. In raw agony, she clutched at her chest and fell backwards only to feel a sharp kick land squarely somewhere on her spine. She cried out.
It was Tristan.
"You threatened to kill her last night!" Tristan sneered from behind, cutting into the silence and adding salt to injury.
"No, she said it to me first!" Nyx’ara screamed back.
"But she didn’t pull through with it, did she? Did she hurt you as you have hurt her?!"
His voice was cold. Absolute. It held none of the warmth that her brother, Tristan’s, voice usually held whenever he talked to her... that was before six years ago.
Before Elara and her mother joined their family.
The images shifted, pulling her back to the moment when she trudged through the busy streets, taking it one step at a time because frankly, she didn’t want to go to the pack’s school. It was the last place she ever wanted to be seen, ever since her stepsister became prom queen and her boyfriend, Flynn, prom king.
At first, she had seen no wrong in both of them winning and in fact, had cheered for them until slowly, things began to shift. Flynn stopped paying attention to her needs and always put Elara’s before her own.
Whenever she complained to him about feeling neglected, she was seen as unreasonable and spoiled until...
She walked in on them all tangled up in her father’s bed and fucking like they somehow wanted to crawl inside each other!
Elara had been bent over her father’s shelf, moaning to the heavens while Flynn, who was standing between her spread-out legs, pounded into her with animalistic energy from behind.
She was, however, pulled out of these thoughts when she heard the sound of people running forward, toward the school’s main entrance.
For some reason, the place was extremely chaotic, but because she was never one to partake in school politics and entertainment, she didn’t rush off to check as the other students did.
That is until...
"That girl is about to jump! Isn’t that the school’s rooftop library?!" Somebody cried loudly, "From that height, she would die if she jumped!"
Her heart slammed against the wall of her chest after hearing those words, and in desperation, she quickly roped her way through the crowd and felt her soul instantly leave her body when she saw a familiar figure standing dangerously too close to the edge of the... rooftop.
It was Elara.
Her sister.
And she was crying hysterically.
Her usually smooth face was blotchy and red. Her hair was the messiest Nyx’ara had ever seen and the look in her eyes was... deadly.
In frozen fear, Nyx’ara watched as Elara’s minions begged her to move away from the edge but she wouldn’t listen. And so in fear, she rushed into the school building, took the first elevator to the rooftop, combed through the several aisles of dusty books, and paused when she realized that Elara had taken a small step away from the edge.
Relief crashed through her.
But it wasn’t for long. It didn’t last.
Because the next thing she saw was her wicked grin.
Her blood ran cold.
She choked out; "Elara, don’t do it."
She didn’t respond. Something in her eyes flashed darkly.
"Please."
"If you think you’ll ever get to marry Flynn later when we grow up because of the flimsy mate bond between you two, then you don’t know what you’re up against. I will never allow you to do that! Over my dead body!"
Nyx’ara frowned at her words, and her voice was barely above a whisper as she hissed; "He has left me, Elara. He’s now yours."
But she didn’t listen. Instead, she walked over to trail her cold sharp fingers over Nyx’ara’s arm... drawing blood as she went.
"He is mine but not fully... and in a couple of days, he will become Alpha and he will need to choose his Luna."
For a moment, Nyx’ara openly stared at her stepsister, wondering how a girl so young could be so cold. She also wondered what may have gone wrong as she could vividly remember being good friends with Elara for several years before her mother died.
However, she quickly shook her head, dispelled these thoughts, lowered her eyes, and muttered; "I don’t want him, Elara. I saw you two fucking three days ago."
A momentary look of shock crossed her face but as soon as it came, it quickly disappeared and was replaced with one of pleasure. She smiled. "Oh, you did? Good. This will drive the wedge between you two even deeper."
Huh?
In panic, Nyx’ara tried to grab Elara’s arms and stop her from throwing herself off the roof but she was stronger. Elara was a real wolf, not some runt like her.
The next thing that happened happened in a blur; and in the next minute, Elara stumbled backwards... and backwards... leaning out of the broken floor-to-ceiling window, and then—
BAM!
The sound echoed around the compound, the force so great, it nearly sent Nyx’ara flying. She ran over to the spot where Elara had been standing only moments ago and felt her heart flip when she heard someone shout from below; "Someone has just jumped from the roof!"
"Elara just committed suicide!"
"Goddess!" Another person squealed, "There’s someone else there with her! It’s not suicide it’s murder!" they yelled, and as soon as they did, a loud gasp rippled through the crowd.
