Chapter 101: The Five-Million License
Almost a year had passed since the morning Itachi first walked into ANBU headquarters carrying too much of his mother’s cooking.
Inside Ren’s commercial-district office, the passing months had accumulated in the form of reports across his desk. Itachi had settled into regular ANBU assignments under Shisui, the Civilian Academy had completed another term, and every village-funded seat negotiated with Hiruzen was occupied.
Ren’s reconstruction investments were finally paying substantial returns. Rent flowed steadily from the commercial district, while his Fire Capital factories continued expanding their contracts among the nobility.
The door to the office opened. Kakuzu walked in carrying the annual consolidated ledger, a fresh stack of factory reports from the capital, and a formal request from the Civilian Academy administration for a new classroom building.
Kakuzu placed the heavy ledger onto the center of the desk. "The final payment from the capital textile contract cleared this morning."
Ren picked up his pen. "Are the capital factories still our largest earners?"
"By a wide margin," Kakuzu confirmed, opening the ledger. "Cosmetics, perfumes, sanitation goods, luxury textiles, and the noble-house vanity contracts remain ahead of every other division. Reconstruction repayments and commercial rent provide the most reliable passive income. The Civilian Academy is financially stable, though it is still reinvesting much of what it earns."
Ren pulled the Academy’s expansion request toward him. The proposed building would add several classrooms, a larger seal-making workshop, and space for the evening accounting and vocational courses.
He checked the projected cost, signed the approval, and pushed it back toward Kakuzu.
"The final figure from the current period is complete," Kakuzu announced.
He slid the ledger forward. Ren looked at the bottom line.
Over the period since his highly expensive ocular and medical treatments, his businesses had produced:
95,708,000 ryō
Kakuzu looked deeply satisfied. Nearly one hundred million ryō in new business income without selling a major property or liquidating a factory was an excellent year.
Ren was watching a different figure.
A familiar blue window appeared across his vision.
[Qualifying Business Income During Period: 95,708,000 Ryō]
[Business Capital Generated During Period: 9,570,800 BC]
[Current Business Capital: 10,000,000 BC]
[Milestone Reached]
Kakuzu noticed Ren staring silently at the ledger. "Did you find an accounting error?"
"The accounts are perfect," Ren said. "Something else has gone wrong."
For almost a year, Ren had avoided casual System purchases.
His current eyes were already healthy. He had been saving for the Eternal Mangekyō upgrade because it was the next true step forward, not another treatment. Ten million BC was still nowhere near enough for Ren to spend carelessly, but it was the first balance that made the upgrade feel reachable.
He fully expected to keep saving.
The System immediately ruined that plan.
[New Industry License Unlocked]
[Intimacy and Wellness Manufacturing]
[License Price: 5,000,000 BC]
Ren read the price twice.
Buying it would instantly erase half of everything he had spent the last year saving.
Extortionist, Ren thought sharply.
The System silently generated a response window, noting that the price covered an entirely new commercial industry. It included manufacturing knowledge, material formulas, safety standards, product designs, and unrestricted access to every product available within the current industry tier.
Ren opened the private preview catalogue.
At first, he saw exactly the products he expected. There were dildos of varying shapes, sizes, and materials, manual and chakra-powered vibrators, anal plugs, beads, sleeves, and rings. The list continued into soft cuffs, physical restraints, collars, blindfolds, clamps, harnesses, lingerie, stockings, and revealing sleepwear.
Ren remained entirely unconvinced that the collection of toys was worth the System equivalent of fifty million ryō.
Then he reached the manufacturing section.
The license did not just sell him products; it sold him the industry. It included safe flexible-material formulas, chakra-conductive materials, body-safe dyes and protective coatings, high-grade lubricants, and massage oils. It provided sterilization products, adjustable chakra-power mechanisms, exact product molds, and factory machinery specifications.
It went further. It established sizing and comfort standards, durability testing protocols, discreet packaging seals, locked storage cases, and private mail-order systems. It offered shop layouts, catalogue designs, inexpensive civilian product lines, luxury noble editions, custom commissions, and specialized couples’ products.
Ren considered the price again.
The shinobi world had entire industries dedicated to killing and almost nothing created purely for pleasure. The license would give Ren the materials, machinery, and product knowledge to control an untouched market before anyone else even understood it existed.
Five million BC still hurt, but the opportunity spread across all five great nations.
"Fine," he muttered. "It is organized extortion."
Kakuzu looked up from the ledger. "I did not say anything."
"I wasn’t speaking to you," Ren told him.
That only made Kakuzu look at him with deeper suspicion.
Ren confirmed the purchase.
[Intimacy and Wellness Manufacturing License Purchased]
[5,000,000 BC Deducted]
[Remaining Balance: 5,000,000 BC]
The System immediately deposited the physical materials directly into Black Vault.
Only now could Ren show anything to Kakuzu.
Ren’s right eye shifted to crimson. A small spatial rift opened above his desk, and he pulled out several thick master blueprint folios, manufacturing manuals, sample blocks of flexible materials, small prototype mechanisms, quality-control instructions, and preliminary product catalogues.
He dropped the sudden pile onto the desk.
Kakuzu looked at the materials. He didn’t ask where they came from. He already knew about Ren’s spatial storage ability and had long since stopped expecting ordinary explanations for the designs and materials Ren produced.
Kakuzu reached across the desk and opened the first blueprint folder.
The page showed several smooth beads connected along a flexible cord, accompanied by detailed measurements, material requirements, and cleaning instructions.
Kakuzu studied the drawing for several seconds before looking at Ren.
"What is this supposed to do?"
Ren glanced toward the closed office door, then crooked one finger for Kakuzu to come closer.
Kakuzu leaned forward reluctantly.
Ren tapped the first drawing. "These go inside a woman’s ass."
Kakuzu immediately leaned back.
"What the fuck is wrong with you?"
Ren ignored the question and turned the page. A carefully measured cylindrical product filled most of the next blueprint.
"This one should be easier to understand. You can probably guess where it goes from the shape."
"I understand the shape," Kakuzu said. "I am asking why you have factory plans for it."
"Because people will buy it."
Ren turned another page and pointed toward the internal seal array running through a smaller device. Kakuzu initially assumed it was some kind of medical tool until he noticed the adjustable power settings.
"And that?"
"It vibrates."
Kakuzu stared at him.
Ren tapped the six separate output levels printed beside the diagram. "Apparently, one setting is not enough."
For a moment, Kakuzu appeared to reconsider every business decision that had led him into Ren’s office.
He pulled another folder from the pile and opened it himself. That one contained padded cuffs, blindfolds, collars, clamps, and several devices whose purposes were not immediately obvious.
Kakuzu stopped at the clamps.
"I am not asking."
"Probably for the best."
"No," Kakuzu corrected, closing the folder. "I am asking why anyone would willingly pay for these things."
Ren leaned back and gestured toward the shelves covering one wall of his office. Among the commercial reports, reference manuals, and imported books sat one of Jiraiya’s familiar orange novels.
"That book sells across Fire Country," Ren said. "The author travels around peeping into bathhouses and somehow still earns more from perversion than most jōnin earn from missions."
"That is a book."
"It proves the customers already exist. Stressed shinobi, lonely spouses, widows, noblewomen trapped in arranged marriages, couples who are bored, and people who simply enjoy strange things. Jiraiya sells them fantasies. We will sell them equipment."
Kakuzu looked down at the closed folder again. His disgust had not disappeared, but professional curiosity was beginning to interfere with it.
"Are we even allowed to sell these?"
"There is no law against them."
"There is no law because no one knew they needed one."
"Exactly. We enter the market before some miserable council clerk learns enough to regulate it."
Kakuzu reopened the folder and moved past the illustrations to the financial projections. "You cannot place these in the front window beside perfume and bath soap."
"We won’t. The public stores will advertise massage products, luxury lingerie, marital wellness, and private personal care. The explicit catalogue stays behind the counter. Orders arrive through sealed forms and leave in unmarked packages."
"And the clans?"
"They will complain publicly and order privately."
"The village administration?"
"Will collect commercial taxes and discover that moral objections are surprisingly flexible."
Kakuzu turned another page. The basic civilian models were inexpensive to manufacture, but the suggested prices on the premium chakra-powered editions were several times higher. Custom noble commissions carried margins that made him pause.
He checked the material costs again.
"You expect someone to pay this much for a vibrating cylinder?"
"I expect wealthy people to pay more because theirs comes in a silk-lined box with a gold crest."
Kakuzu’s eyes moved slowly down the column of projected returns.
"What about advertising?"
"We begin with people who already trust our products. The capital noblewomen test the premium line. Their recommendations open the wealthy households. After that, discreet catalogues go through our cosmetics shops, bathhouses, and mail-order network. We could also partner up with medical clinics."
Kakuzu tapped the page with one finger. "Medical clinics?"
"Some products can honestly be sold for muscle relaxation and marital health. The others will be sold without pretending anyone needs a doctor’s permission."
Kakuzu continued reading. He asked about cleaning, product failure, injury claims, and whether the chakra cores could overheat. Ren showed him the sterilization formulas, safety limits, emergency shutoff seals, and durability tests included with the license.
That finally impressed him.
"This is more complete than most weapon-production manuals," Kakuzu admitted.
"People become angry when a sword breaks," Ren said. "They become much angrier when one of these breaks while they are using it."
Kakuzu stared at him again, decided he did not want the details, and returned to the projected margins.
Several quiet minutes passed while he calculated manufacturing costs, factory modifications, distribution expenses, and the likely revenue from the first noble orders.
When he finally looked up, the disgust remained on his face. It had simply been joined by greed.
"How quickly can we begin?"
Ren did not need to build an entirely new commercial empire to support the license.
His existing Fire Capital network already contained almost everything required. His textile factories could easily pivot a small portion of their lines to produce lingerie, blindfolds, harnesses, and soft restraints. His cosmetic factories already had the vats and chemical knowledge to produce massage oils, lubricants, and scented cleaners. His seal workshops could assemble the small chakra-powered devices.
His packaging factories were fully capable of creating discreet boxes and private catalogues, and his existing courier network could deliver orders without exposing the customers.
"We only need to add a few specialized molds, material workshops, and secure assembly rooms," Kakuzu estimated. "Adapting the existing factories will cost far less than constructing new ones."
"Which is exactly why the venture is valuable to us," Ren pointed out. "We already possess the production and distribution network needed to exploit it."
The first customers were already obvious.
Ren’s noble contacts in the Fire Capital had invested in his factories since their earliest expansion. They used his cosmetics, perfumes, bath products, and luxury textiles, and their recommendations had opened the doors of half the wealthy households in the capital.
More importantly, they trusted his discretion and already knew him well enough that he would not have to explain why he was sending them a locked catalogue filled with sex toys.
Ren decided against rushing the products directly into his shops. The factories would begin with a small batch so they could test the materials, chakra mechanisms, cleaning procedures, packaging, and noise.
Once the prototypes survived inspection, sealed catalogues and selected samples would go to his capital contacts. Their complaints would expose every problem his factory managers missed, and their approval would make selling the finished line to other noble households effortless.
Only after that would they prepare the cheaper civilian range and private mail-order service.
Kakuzu approved of letting wealthy noblewomen discover the expensive mistakes before they began mass production.
Ren handed Kakuzu the first list of factory modifications.
Kakuzu studied the sheer number of different products listed in the blueprints. "Do we truly need all of them?"
"People are extremely particular about pleasure," Ren pointed out. "They will pay far more for personal preference than they ever will for necessity."
Kakuzu hummed in agreement, his pen already moving as he began calculating the premium markups.
Ren spent the next hour preparing coded orders for his Fire Capital factory managers. The instructions were meticulously divided, revealing only the individual components each facility must produce. A textile factory would produce straps; a seal workshop would output unmarked vibration cores; one of the cosmetic factories would prepare the flexible material while a separate molding room shaped the outer shells.
By dividing the work between several facilities, most employees would see only one harmless component instead of the finished product.
As Ren sealed the final scroll, Kakuzu looked up.
"What should we call the brand?" the treasurer asked.
Ren looked over the elegant, understated catalogue covers supplied by the System. There were no crude drawings or aggressive lettering.
"Something respectable," Ren decided, handing the sealed orders to Kakuzu. "People pay much more when the box lets them pretend they aren’t buying a sex toy."
