Chapter 112: The Eye Obito Left Behind
Ren returned to the clinic just as Kakashi was being shown into the examination room.
Before they followed him inside, Tsunade caught Ren’s arm in the hallway, giving him a flat, serious look.
"Don’t start selling the benefits before he’s even heard the risks," Tsunade warned.
Ren frowned. "I wasn’t going to pitch him."
Shizune stepped closer, smoothing the collar of his jacket that had been rumpled since that morning. She leaned in, gave him a quick kiss on the mouth, and murmured against him, "That means listen more than you talk."
Tsunade sighed. "Don’t encourage him, Shizune."
They walked into the examination room.
Kakashi was sitting on the edge of the medical bed, his forehead protector already lifted. His left eye was closed, leaving a jagged scar visible against his pale skin. Tsunade didn’t waste time with small talk; her hands flared with green chakra as she leaned in to begin her preliminary check of the surrounding optic tissue.
Ren explained the proposal simply. There was a seal that could make Kakashi’s body work more efficiently with the transplanted Sharingan. It would drastically reduce the chakra he wasted every second just by carrying it.
Kakashi’s lone dark eye shifted toward him. He understood immediately.
"You found a way to make my eye cheaper to operate," Kakashi noted dryly.
"Finally," Ren said, leaning back against the counter. "Someone understands me."
"Both of you, shut up," Tsunade ordered, her green chakra illuminating Kakashi’s face. She pulled back and wiped her hands on a towel. "Let’s be clear about the limits. Your reserves remain your own. Using the Sharingan will still cost you chakra. This procedure is about making your body work better with the eye, not miraculously turning you into an Uchiha."
Kakashi’s casual demeanor evaporated. He looked directly at Tsunade.
"What happens to Obito’s eye?" Kakashi asked.
The tone of the room changed instantly.
"The eye itself is not being replaced, modified, or stripped of anything," Tsunade told him, her voice even. "The seal changes the connection between you and the eye."
Kakashi processed the distinction, but he wasn’t finished. "And if it fails?"
Tsunade didn’t sugarcoat the reality. "We could damage the tissue badly enough that you lose the eye completely."
Kakashi went quiet.
He didn’t argue, and he didn’t launch into a defensive speech. His hand simply drifted up, his fingers brushing the metal edge of his lifted forehead protector almost unconsciously.
Ren stayed silent. He realized Tsunade had been entirely right. Kakashi wasn’t weighing the cost of an expensive medical transplant. He was weighing the risk of losing the last physical thing Obito had left him.
Ren forced himself to resist pushing. He leaned against the counter and waited.
Kakashi finally lowered his hand. "How much is it currently costing me?"
"Let’s find out," Tsunade said.
She told Kakashi to cover the eye again.
Kakashi pulled his forehead protector back down, and Shizune placed a chakra-monitoring seal near his left temple. They recorded the passive drain first with the Sharingan covered.
Then Kakashi lifted the protector again.
The three-tomoe Sharingan stared back at them as Tsunade took a second reading while he actively used its vision.
The difference was immediate.
Shizune handed the readings to Kakashi.
He studied them for several seconds.
"That much?"
"And that’s before prolonged combat," Shizune said.
Kakashi sighed. "That’s irritating."
Ren stared at him. "That’s your reaction?"
Kakashi shrugged, handing the clipboard back to Shizune. "Do the examination. Keep preparing the seal."
Ren nodded, assuming the decision was made. "Good."
Kakashi slid off the examination bed and adjusted his vest. "I said prepare it, Ren. I didn’t say put it on me."
Kakashi left the clinic a short while later with instructions to return whenever he had made a final decision.
The moment the heavy examination room door clicked shut, Ren let out an exasperated breath.
"He’s being stubborn," Ren complained.
Tsunade, still seated on the low stool beside the medical bed, reached out and caught Ren by the front of his shirt. She pulled him forward, guiding him smoothly between her parted knees.
"And you kept your mouth shut," Tsunade noted.
"Mostly," Ren said. His hands settled comfortably on her waist.
"I’m proud of you."
A few feet away at the counter, Shizune continued filling in the details of Kakashi’s medical chart.
"Don’t reward him," Shizune said without looking up. "He’ll think restraint gets prizes."
Ren looked over his shoulder at her. "Doesn’t it?"
Shizune finally looked up from her clipboard. "Not while I’m working."
Tsunade laughed. She pulled Ren down by his shirt, kissed him firmly on the mouth, and then pushed him away by his chest.
"Give him time," Tsunade said, standing up. "He needs to think about it."
Evening settled quietly over the Uchiha compound.
Naruto had finally burned off his remaining energy and fallen asleep, leaving the house peaceful. Ren found Kushina sitting on the low couch in the living room.
He sat down beside her, and Kushina immediately shifted her weight, draping her legs comfortably across his lap. Ren’s hand rested naturally on her bare thigh, his thumb drawing slow, absent circles as he told her what had happened at the hospital.
He explained the compatibility seal, Tsunade’s conditions, and the fact that Kakashi hadn’t refused the procedure, but simply wouldn’t agree to it yet.
Kushina leaned her head back against the cushion. "That’s his choice."
"I know," Ren agreed.
He kept his hand on her thigh, watching her expression. "Tsunade warned me he would hesitate. If the seal fails badly enough, he could lose the eye."
Kushina nodded slowly, but she didn’t seem entirely surprised.
"It isn’t just an eye to him," Ren added quietly. "It’s Obito."
Kushina stopped moving.
Since Minato’s death, she had kept her distance from Kakashi because looking at him brought too many memories back at once.
And Kakashi had spent that same time carrying Obito’s eye and treating the drain as part of the gift.
Kushina went quiet for a while, her fingers absently tracing the edge of the cushion.
"I told you I needed to speak to him," she said eventually. "Back on the veranda. I meant it then too."
Ren remembered.
She gave a small, frustrated breath and looked toward the dark hallway leading to Naruto’s room.
"Then there was always another reason to wait. Naruto needed something. I was tired. Kakashi was on a mission. Or I just didn’t want to spend the evening thinking about Minato again."
Her legs remained across Ren’s lap, but the easy comfort from earlier had faded from her expression.
"And now he’s hesitating because part of him still thinks that drain is something he has to carry."
Kushina looked down at Ren’s hand on her thigh and covered it with her own.
"When Kakashi comes back to the hospital, tell me."
Ren nodded.
Kushina squeezed his hand once.
"I’ve delayed it long enough."
