Chapter 128: Transition
All beings, living or dead, were made with the elements of chaos and order, which were like light and darkness—one couldn’t exist without the other. Most living things in the mortal realm were a combination of them, much like me, yet divines were made purely of one or the other.
However, before I even got into my new body, I influenced both elements instead of being influenced by one more than the other.
Witchcraft users were creatures of discord, yet the eternal variant leaned more towards order, which made them a being of duality like me. However, for gods, this wasn’t possible to achieve as their bodies rejected one element rather than accepting it. The fact that I found myself in the body of an eternal witch meant I was meant to be leaning towards order, but in reality, I wasn’t, as the chaos inside of me reigned more than the light that I should’ve been bathed in.
I was much more complex than these normal mortals, thanks to my pure divine soul that hadn’t gone through the wheel or reincarnation as the others. These alignments weren’t unique to witches, as the elves were like witchcraft users. Moon and Blaze elves were chaotic, while the rest of the Ocean, Nature, and Sun elves were leaning towards order. Humans were also chaotic, even though they couldn’t use magic. Yet, they created alchemy, an abomination of science that had a destructive nature, thanks to the gunfire they made with it.
That diabolical craft also created sedatives for Lycans, which were a valuable tool to take them down with. Along with the Eternal witches, there were only two other beings of pure duality, and those were Lycans and vampires. These three races were pillars at one point in the distant past, yet the witches were the most powerful beings in the mortal realm, thanks to their connection to Aster, the goddess of creation.
My father told me that Edna and I met because she was the priestess of the gods, which allowed her to hear my voice, while no one else could. Or at least I thought she was the only one, yet Elias had also heard me, but by that point, he was dead and trapped in the soul cairn. The balance among the three races was shattered when Aster and Orenz were killed, severing the connection between the gods and mortals. After losing the time magic that came from them, the witches were vulnerable, allowing the vampires to attack, seeking our addictive blood.
Somehow, they had convinced all the other races that the eternal witches were dangerous, allowing the downfall of my current race. Edna was the only pureblood survivor from that time, and I was blissfully unaware of all the horrors she faced during those dreadful moments, leaving a gap within the information pool I could draw from.
Not even Papa told me about you.
The affinities of order and chaos were irrelevant to mortals as they weren’t powerful enough to mix or synergize—a phenomenon that could lead to mayhem no matter which element was used. It was why gods had to be wary of who they went up against, as their own power could’ve been used against them with the wrong opponent.
Hm… Valdios and Fenrir were supposed to be one god, in an attempt to create one of duality like me, yet instead of merging, they separated, creating twins within that moment. Why didn’t that happen with me?
Order and Chaos couldn’t coexist equally within divines until I was born, thanks to Orenz’s meddling.
I’m the first divine to exist as both, but why? Is it because I was created by mistake?
Aster and Orenz created children on their own, never mixing, a rule they had made to maintain order, until one went back on their word once I was created.
You intended me to be only a book before your brother gave me life. Hah… Would you have created that if you knew I would come to exist? Well… At least it doesn’t seem we are so different from mortals as we can be fools and make mistakes, all the same.
Perfection was unattainable, even to the divine.
Thus, the downfall of a god robs this world of magic. Until I came along and gave it back to the half breeds of eternal witches that were left. If I can figure out how I got linked to all these people, maybe I can try to change the doom looming over this world. I’m the one thing Midnight couldn’t visualize in her prophetic dreams—the only wild card left to play.
I bit my lip while I rolled on the bed.
Argh! Why can’t I seem to find any way to do so?!
This whole time, I had been trying to recall everything I knew about the gods and our world. After all, I felt like I was missing something, and sadly, it was unattainable to me. Ever since we came back to the room, the siblings had been trying to figure out the snake problem, while I, on the other hand, rested on the bed, attempting to figure out the world instead.
If I’m the key, then there has to be something I can do! Just what were you planning, Midnight? Please give me a sign… Something to grip on. Anything! If I could only create rather than destroy! Argh…
My eyes shifted towards my vampire, who was scrolling on his phone quietly beside me.
Would I feel this way if you weren’t in my heart?
However, even if I could tap into my other affinity, it didn’t mean it couldn’t lead to more destruction, as the synergetic effect could cause more problems than resolutions.
Just look at what happened with Alijah and Papa’s familiar. Their power clashed, causing a meltdown near them that claimed Ben’s life, who was Rem’s uncle, while crippling her dad. All because Lilith couldn’t stop herself from… Hah… it doesn’t matter anymore.
To kill a god, the soul cairn would be needed to separate their immortal souls from their bodies, which meant the prison itself was also a source of duality between chaos and order to keep their souls in there. This meant that both elements could suppress us.
So… What am I missing? Is this Yama? Can he also be a being that descends from both affinities? No… Wait… who used to be the god of death before him?
Another heavy sigh left my lips as I rolled around on the bed, prompting my vampire to drop his phone on the side.
Can I even do what I’m meant to do? Midnight… What am I supposed to do? Elves can heal, but how can I… bring together this broken world? No…I’m the person destroying everything. Hah… Why is everything so hard?
That thought was broken when Thea suddenly ran out of the room, startling me.
“There she goes. I have no idea what she saw that got her like that.” Oswald shook his head, shrugging before shifting his gaze to the clock. “I guess I’ll go get food for us. We’ll have to meet Ma and Pa soon.”
I had not noticed how I had curled up on the bed while I tried to sort out my chaotic thoughts with Eli snuggled within my grip. My head hurt from trying to think, yet it could’ve also been from the lingering hunger.
“I think that’s a good idea. Let me know when you’re on your way back.” Loki breathed.
“Yeah, I’ll see if I can help Thea in whatever she’s set her eyes on.” He closed the door behind him, allowing my beloved’s gaze to land on me while I lay there silently sulking in the futures to come.
“Hey, sweets, you’ve been exceptionally silent while sulking. Do you want to talk?” My prince leaned over to me.
In response, I stayed as a ball, gazing away from him.
What is there to tell… Everything is going wrong.
