Chapter 108: Comparing Lasers with the Destroyer
Beams of high-temperature light shot out from the Destroyer’s face, blasting all of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s vehicles into the sky. A portion of the agents, whether Hydra or S.H.I.E.L.D., heroically sacrificed themselves. Fortunately, the place where the Destroyer had descended was a desert wasteland, not a city or town. The only ones attacked were the agents who had taken the initiative to investigate.
While the agents fled in panic, a black van drifted in with a cloud of sand and stopped in front of them. Orion Cross, Sif, the Warriors Three, Thor, who had come to spectate, and Coulson, the driver, got out of the vehicle and looked toward the Destroyer gradually approaching them.
"After feeling it up close, are we sure we don’t need missile support?"
Coulson looked at the shocking laser marks in the distance, then turned to Orion Cross.
"You’d better put that idea away."
Orion Cross immediately stopped Coulson. Missiles? Leaving aside whether they could deal with the Destroyer, the person launching the missile would probably want to blow up Orion Cross’s group first. When the time came, Orion Cross would be fine, but Coulson and these Asgardians would probably all go sleep in Valhalla.
Hydra had not moved against Orion Cross because they did not have an opportunity and would not expose themselves easily. But if things were like the original Avengers plot, and Coulson was even the one actively requesting missile support, then Orion Cross believed Hydra absolutely would not let go of this chance to create casualties caused by a "missile malfunction."
"Have you fought this thing before?"
Coulson suddenly remembered Orion Cross’s past and asked.
"No."
Orion Cross shook his head. Back when he encountered Odin in Asgard, he happened to be in his untransformed state. At that time, Odin had no need to use the Destroyer at all. Besides, he also knew that even if he did use the Destroyer, there was a high chance it would not kill Orion Cross.
"For Asgard!"
While Orion Cross and Coulson were chatting, Sif and the Warriors Three had already charged toward the Destroyer.
"Don’t look at me. That’s their duty and honor."
Thor held a hamburger in one hand and a beer in the other, leaning against the car as he shrugged at Orion Cross. "Besides, I can’t stop them now."
In the distance, the four charging toward the Destroyer instantly split apart and dodged the shockwave. Volstagg hurled his axe at the Destroyer, only for it to be casually swatted away.
"Sif!"
The other two raised a shield and suddenly shouted.
"Got it!"
Sif gripped her sword and rushed toward them. The instant her foot stepped onto the shield, Fandral and Hogun pushed upward with all their strength, launching Sif high into the sky.
"This move looks very familiar. Diana next door seems to have used it too."
Orion Cross rubbed his chin as he watched their tactic. No wonder the reward for completing the mission related to these four background-character warriors was the Lasso of Truth. Sif really was like a low-spec version of Wonder Woman.
Using her leaping momentum, Sif dodged several attacks from the Destroyer and dropped from high above, driving the magical sword in her hand through the Destroyer’s neck.
However, Sif was not Diana after all, and the Destroyer was not a flesh-and-blood mortal body. It was armor. And armor had no vital points. What use was there in piercing the neck of a suit of armor?
Just as Sif thought she had dealt with the Destroyer and let out a breath of relief, her gaze turned toward Orion Cross. At that moment, the Destroyer suddenly moved. The Uru metal covering the indestructible Destroyer was filled with abundant magical energy, almost like memory metal. Without moving its body, the Destroyer’s entire head turned around, its face flashing with scorching red light.
Sif flipped away and dodged the destructive beam, not even having time to retrieve her sword. The Destroyer straightened its body, pulled Sif’s longsword out of itself, casually threw it onto the ground, and began charging energy again.
Seeing this, the hamburger in Thor’s hand no longer seemed appetizing. A trace of worry flashed in his eyes. "Orion..."
"Don’t worry. I won’t let you sacrifice yourself."
Orion Cross patted Thor on the shoulder and walked toward the battlefield. Thor looked at Orion Cross’s back and was immediately deeply moved.
Unfortunately, Thor did not know that sacrifice meant awakening, and awakening meant the return of divine power.
"Loki, you chose a good place."
Orion Cross walked in front of the Destroyer and smiled faintly.
On Asgard’s throne, Loki, who was holding Gungnir and controlling the Destroyer, frowned slightly, feeling that something was wrong. But thinking of the threat this person posed to him and Asgard, Loki immediately ordered an attack.
The Destroyer’s face gradually turned red.
Bang!
Orion Cross punched it directly, knocking the Destroyer’s head crooked. The destructive ray also shot into the empty ground nearby.
Clink, clink.
The crisp sound of metal colliding rang out from Orion Cross’s hands. It was the sound of the chains of the Blades of Chaos.
The Destroyer twisted its neck back and was just about to attack when Orion Cross swung the Blades of Chaos, instantly slashing at the Destroyer’s joints. That was right. Armor had no vital points, but as long as one attacked the joints, some damage would inevitably be caused. Just like when Sif pierced the Destroyer’s neck earlier, after the Destroyer’s joints were attacked, it needed a brief moment to repair itself.
Orion Cross slashed open the Destroyer’s hands, feet, and neck. Just as the Destroyer prepared to repair itself, a smear of gold slipped into the gaps. Flowing sand drilled into the Destroyer’s "wounds," stopping its repair. Orion Cross used the Blades of Chaos to pin the Destroyer’s feet in place, making it unable to perform even its final movements.
"Do you know why I said earlier that you chose a good place?"
As Orion Cross’s words fell, the desert sand around them began gathering at high speed.
The Sun Disc rose once again from the sand.
It was already night, but the enormous Sun Disc was like a second sun, hanging high above the heavens.
"Want to compare lasers?"
Orion Cross looked at the Destroyer, which was constantly firing destructive beams in an attempt to break free, and chuckled.
The Sun Disc, carrying the starfire power of the Ascended, suddenly bombarded the Destroyer. The violent impact continuously scattered the sand and dust on the ground, exposing the granite hidden deep beneath.
One minute later, under Orion Cross’s control, the Sun Disc rotated and stopped its attack, slowly collapsing away.
Everyone rushed to the center of the battlefield, but all they saw was a smooth stretch of ground, with Orion Cross standing there alone.
"Where’s the Destroyer?"
Sif held her longsword and swept her gaze around warily.
"No idea. Maybe the grains of sand under your feet are it."
Orion Cross rubbed his neck and casually pointed at the pile of yellow sand beneath Sif’s feet.
