Empire of Blood

Chapter 43 – System Shop

By the next morning, the difference was noticeable.

Not because everything had changed, but because some things had started to.

The flattened area near the Citadel had turned into a natural center point. People gathered there without being told to, sitting closer together but no longer pressed into each other. Conversations were quieter now, more focused. Movement had purpose, even if it was still uncertain.

Jack stood slightly off to the side, watching.

It wasn’t organized yet.

But it was trending that way.

A few of the refugees had already started doing small things on their own.

One man was clearing loose stones from the edge of the flattened space, stacking them in a rough pile instead of leaving them scattered. Another had found a piece of broken wood somewhere and was using it to level out a smaller section near where a group was sitting.

It wasn’t efficient.

But it was something.

Jack let his awareness expand across Sanguina again.

The territory felt… reactive.

Not alive, not conscious, but responsive. The more people moved through it, the more defined certain areas became in his perception. Not physically yet, but in the way the system seemed to recognize use.

Clusters forming.

Paths beginning.

Patterns.

He opened the system again.

[System Shop — Territory Management]

This time, he didn’t just look at terrain shaping.

There were other options.

[Terrain Shaping]

[District Designation — Locked]

[Structure Enhancement — Locked]

Jack focused on the second one briefly.

[District Designation]

Requirement: Additional Development Needed

Not yet.

That was fine.

He returned to terrain shaping.

Instead of selecting a single area, he started moving the selection slowly across the ground, testing how the system responded.

Each shift changed the cost.

Not randomly.

Logically.

Bigger area.

More gold.

More uneven terrain.

Higher cost.

He stopped on a narrow strip between two clusters of people.

A path.

[Flatten Terrain — Small Linear Area]

Cost: 9 Gold

Jack looked at it for a moment.

Cheaper.

Because it was smaller.

More precise.

Behind him, Hanna’s voice came again.

“You’re mapping it now.”

He glanced back slightly.

“Trying to.”

She stepped up beside him, following his line of sight.

“That’ll help more than clearing big sections,” she said. “People move before they settle.”

Jack looked back at the highlighted strip.

That made sense.

He confirmed it.

The ground shifted again, this time in a narrow line. The uneven sections pressed down, stones settling into place, creating something that wasn’t a road but was clearly easier to walk on than what had been there before.

[Gold -9]

The effect was immediate.

Not dramatic.

Just… noticeable.

A woman walking between the two clusters adjusted her path slightly, stepping onto the newly leveled strip without thinking about it. A second person followed. Then another.

Within a minute, the line had turned into a natural route.

Jack watched it happen.

That was better.

He moved the selection again, extending the path slightly toward the Cathedral.

[Flatten Terrain — Small Linear Area]

Cost: 10 Gold

He confirmed it.

The second section connected cleanly with the first.

[Gold -10]

Now the path led somewhere.

Hanna nodded slightly.

“Yeah,” she said. “That works.”

She turned immediately, raising her voice just enough to carry.

“Use this,” she said, gesturing toward the newly formed strip. “It’s easier.”

People listened.

Not all at once.

But enough.

Jack shifted his focus again, this time toward a slightly raised section near where a group had started gathering. It wasn’t unusable, but it forced people to sit unevenly, adjusting constantly.

[Flatten Terrain — Small Area]

Cost: 12 Gold

He hesitated.

Not because it wasn’t useful.

Because of the total.

He checked his remaining gold briefly.

Still enough.

But no longer comfortable.

Everything adds up.

He confirmed it anyway.

The ground settled.

[Gold -12]

The group using that space adjusted almost immediately, spreading out slightly now that they didn’t have to compensate for uneven footing.

One of them let out a quiet breath, like they hadn’t realized how much effort it had taken just to sit there before.

Jack stepped back slightly, looking over what he had done.

Two connected paths.

One additional usable area.

Not much.

But noticeable.

More importantly—

Intentional.

Hanna moved again, already adjusting people to the changes.

“You’re wasting less space now,” she said as she passed him.

Jack nodded.

“Trying not to waste gold.”

She gave a short nod in return.

“Good habit.”

Further out, a small group had started stacking the stones that had been cleared earlier into something more structured. Not a wall, not really, but a boundary. A way to define the edge of the space they were using.

They hadn’t been told to do it.

They just did.

Jack watched them for a moment.

Then looked back at the system.

It wasn’t about making Sanguina look like something.

Not yet.

It was about making it work.

And now he knew how much that was going to cost.
