Empire of Blood

Chapter 42 – Stabilisation

Morning came slower than it used to.

Not because the sun was any different, but because for the first time in a while, Jack didn’t wake up expecting something to already be trying to kill him. The tension that had been sitting just beneath the surface since the system arrived wasn’t gone, but it had settled into something more manageable.

He stepped out of the Citadel and paused for a moment, taking in the space around him.

Sanguina was awake.

Not fully organized, not efficient, but moving.

People were already up, some sitting in small groups, others walking with a purpose that hadn’t been there yesterday. The uncertainty was still there, but it wasn’t controlling them anymore. It was being replaced with something quieter.

Routine.

Hanna was already working.

He spotted her near the edge of the open space they had used the night before, speaking with a small group of women. She wasn’t standing above them or giving orders. She was in it with them, talking, listening, adjusting things as she went.

Jack didn’t interrupt.

He let his awareness spread instead.

The territory felt different now that there were more people in it.

Not physically.

System-wise.

It was subtle, but he could feel it in the same way he felt the Citadel or the Cathedral. Something about Sanguina responded to the presence of others. Not strongly yet, but enough to notice.

Population matters.

That lined up.

He moved toward the Cathedral.

The moment he stepped inside, the shift became clearer. The faint fatigue he hadn’t fully acknowledged since the fight eased further, his breathing settling more naturally, the tension in his muscles loosening without him needing to force it.

He stayed there for a while.

Not doing anything.

Just letting it work.

After some time passed, he opened his status again, more out of habit than anything else.

[STATUS]

Level: 22

Strength: 25

Agility: 24

Endurance: 37

Intelligence: 18

Wisdom: 19

Willpower: 25

Perception: 24

Vitality: 33

Luck: 10 (Locked)

The changes from yesterday were already noticeable.

Endurance had gone up enough that the lingering strain from the previous fights had almost disappeared. Vitality had smoothed out the rest. Willpower felt less obvious, but there was a clarity to his thoughts now that hadn’t been there before, especially when he focused.

He closed the screen.

When he stepped back outside, Hanna had shifted positions. The group she had been talking to earlier had split into smaller clusters, and now she was moving between them, giving direction without making it feel like orders.

Jack walked over.

“How’s it looking?” he asked.

She glanced at him briefly before answering.

“Better than yesterday,” she said. “Worse than it needs to be.”

Jack nodded slightly.

“Expected.”

She crossed her arms, looking over the area.

“They don’t need protection right now,” she continued. “They need structure.”

That matched what he had been thinking.

“Same conclusion,” he said.

Hanna looked back at him.

“So what are you doing about it?”

Jack didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he opened the system.

[System Shop — Territory Management]

The options appeared the same as before, but now he looked at them differently.

Not as possibilities.

As costs.

He selected terrain shaping again.

The same section near the Citadel highlighted.

[Flatten Terrain — Small Area]

Cost: 12 Gold

He shifted the selection slightly, expanding it.

[Flatten Terrain — Medium Area]

Cost: 28 Gold

Jack frowned slightly.

He had enough from the dungeon and George, but not enough to waste.

Everything here would scale off decisions like this.

Behind him, Hanna spoke again.

“What does it cost?”

Jack glanced at her.

“Gold,” he said. “Everything.”

She nodded once, like that confirmed something she had already expected.

“Then don’t make it pretty,” she said. “Make it work.”

Jack looked back at the highlighted area.

That made the decision easier.

He reduced the selection again.

Small.

Controlled.

[Flatten Terrain — Small Area]

Cost: 12 Gold

He confirmed it.

The change wasn’t dramatic.

The ground didn’t explode or reshape violently. It shifted. Uneven sections smoothed out. Larger rocks pressed down into the earth. The space settled into something usable rather than something clean.

[Gold -12]

Jack watched it for a moment.

Then nodded.

That was enough.

Hanna stepped forward, looking over the area.

“That’s better,” she said. “We can work with that.”

She turned immediately.

“You,” she called out, gesturing toward a small group nearby. “Start clearing this space. Move anything loose out of the way.”

No hesitation.

They moved.

Jack noticed it.

They didn’t question her.

They didn’t freeze.

They just… acted.

He looked at her.

“You’ve done this before.”

Hanna didn’t look back.

“No,” she said. “I just know what happens if no one does.”

That was fair.

The rest of the morning followed that pattern.

Jack shaped small sections where it mattered most, each one costing just enough that he had to think before confirming it. Hanna filled those spaces immediately, assigning people, adjusting positions, keeping everything moving without letting it turn into chaos.

They didn’t talk much while it happened.

They didn’t need to.

By midday, the center of Sanguina looked different.

Still rough.

Still unfinished.

But no longer empty.

People had places to sit.

To gather.

To exist without standing in the open with nowhere to go.

It wasn’t much.

But it was enough to start.

Jack stood near the edge of the newly flattened area, looking over what they had done so far.

Not complete.

Not efficient.

But functional.

He didn’t need anything more than that yet.

There was still a lot to build.

But now there was somewhere to begin.
