Chapter 233
Thanks to the combined efforts of the fire department and civilian rescue teams, the trapped and injured were quickly freed.
Medical personnel dispatched from the City Hospital did their utmost to administer first aid and treat the wounded.
Ambulances raced to the scene, then sped away just as quickly.
The first to be transported back to the hospital were mostly those with severe injuries, or critical patients who had just been snatched back from the brink of death by Liu Yun, Chenyang, and the others.
The less seriously injured who were unable to walk were taken by the second wave of ambulances. As for those who could still move, they were sent to the hospital in police cars or volunteer taxis temporarily commandeered by officials.
By the time Chenyang finished treating the last victim’s wounds, the sky had already darkened.
Liu Yun dragged her exhausted body over. "Let’s head back to the hospital," she said. "We can leave the rest to the proper authorities."
Angie handed them two bottles of water. "Want to wash up? You two have blood all over your clothes, hands, and faces."
Liu Yun glanced at her hands, then took a bottle and started rinsing them.
She was a woman, after all; even when exhausted, she still cared about her appearance.
Chenyang, however, wasn’t as particular. He took the other bottle, drank a few mouthfuls, and then lit a cigarette.
He asked between slow drags, "With so many casualties, City Hospital can’t possibly take them all, can it?"
"The hospital administration has already coordinated with other hospitals," she replied. "The less critical cases will be diverted to them."
Liu Yun sighed, a sad look on her face. "I heard the death toll is already at six, and that’s just the initial count."
"The crash was too severe. Many people didn’t even know what happened; they were just thrown out of their car windows."
"Yeah, that middle-aged man you two just saved from the brink of death? He was in a vehicle at the very back of the crash, but when he came to, he was at the very front. I’d guess he was thrown at least twenty meters."
"Have they figured out the cause of the accident?" Chenyang asked.
Liu Yun said, "I overheard some of the directors and the vice president talking. Apparently, it was started by some criminal. He was drinking with friends at a roadside barbecue stall, spotted the police, and jumped into his car without even putting on his shoes.
"He drove over to this area and first hit a three-wheeled cart. Then, while reversing, he slammed into a sedan. There were two tour buses on either side of that sedan.
"The impact sent the sedan spinning out of control, causing one of the buses to flip over. Meanwhile, the criminal’s car crashed into the other bus. That bus driver fainted on impact, and his out-of-control vehicle plowed into several other cars, causing them to overturn as well."
Angie frowned. "But that only accounts for seven or eight vehicles. What about the rest?"
"After the initial crash, the cars behind them were going too fast to stop, so it turned into a pile-up."
At this, Liu Yun seemed to recall something. "Oh, right," she said. "I heard the higher-ups saying there were a few people with powerful backgrounds among the injured.
"One is a high-ranking city official, two are fairly well-known celebrities, and I think there was also a young scion from Kyoto.
"After news of the crash spread, a lot of important people called in asking if we’d seen them. I was too busy treating patients to notice. Did either of you see them?"
"I didn’t see the official or the scion, but I ran into a celebrity." Chenyang took a drag from his cigarette and briefly recounted his encounter with the superstar "Brother Ji" and the beautiful woman.
After he finished, Liu Yun’s brow furrowed, her expression turning grave with worry.
Chenyang asked, "What is it? Is this going to be a problem?"
Liu Yun’s expression was complicated. "There were two celebrities involved in the crash. One of them isn’t just a star; they also come from a family with a powerful background. I really hope that’s not the Brother Ji who’s holding a grudge against you. Otherwise... you could be in for some serious trouble."
"So I get into trouble for saving someone’s life?"
"I know it sounds ridiculous, but... it wouldn’t be the first time something like that has happened at City Hospital—saving someone only to have them retaliate against you."
Liu Yun sighed. "I hope my worries are for nothing. Let’s just pray the one who has it in for you isn’t the one with the powerful background."
Chenyang nonchalantly flicked the ash from his cigarette. "Don’t overthink it. If the sky falls, the tall people can hold it up. I don’t care what his background is or what kind of big shot he is. It’s not like he can have me killed in broad daylight."
